Here are a few good reasons why you should consider going organic on your next wine purchase:
• No added sulfites – Organic wines can only have half the amount of sulfites than non-organic wines. Sulfites are one of the contributors to massive wine headaches.
• No use of synthetic fertilizers – The major problem with synthetic fertilizers is that when it rains or when the vines are watered, the chemicals run off into neighboring streams, rivers and lakes thereby, polluting them. These harmful chemicals can also seep into and contaminate groundwater.
• No use of synthetic pesticides – Pesticides are not only harmful to the environment, they are harmful to people and pets as well.
• Organic products are added to enrich the soil – Natural produce, grasses and legumes are added to enrich the soil as opposed to chemical fertilizers.
• Plants and other insects are used as pesticides – Ladybugs may be introduced to keep away the Aphids and plants such as mint are used to repel flea beetles. The herbs, plants and flowers are used as companion plants and planted below the grape vines to keep the bugs and insects away.
• Organic vineyards are sustainable – Farming of any kind contaminates topsoil by using harmful pesticides and herbicides. By not utilizing harmful chemicals, the organic vineyards do not contaminate the topsoil.

There are more than 500 other documented varietals in circulation as well. The following is a list of the most common and important of Italy's varietals.
Rosso (Red)
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Its wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti Classico, Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others.
Nebbiolo - The most noble of Italy's varietals.
Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia.
Bianco (White)
Trebbiano - Behind cataratto (which is made for industrial jug wine), this is the most widely planted white varietal in Italy.
Pinot Grigio - A hugely successful commercial grape (known as Pinot Gris in France)
Garganega - The main grape varietal for wines labeled Soave, this is a crisp, dry white wine from the Veneto wine region of Italy.
