Hello there,

There's nothing I like more than a nice glass of red (usually Shiraz) after a day of work.

I've heard so many different things as to whether or not this is healthy.

Does anyone actually know?

Thanks,

John

welcome John to VC - there seem to be numerous studies extolling the benefits of red wine to your cardiovascular health, however there are other health risks associated with alcohol consumption (liver disease for one). I think one glass of wine a night cannot hurt, especially for your sanity after a long day's work, but as always checking with your doctor who knows your medical history is always the best policy rather than chasing the latest medical study published online.

Welcome John! Most medical studies say that some wine/alcohol is beneficial. There is still the french paradox, which has never been explained. And the fact that the Japanese have the longest life expectancy leads me to believe that Alcohol is not shortening their life spans at all (the japanese are the heaviest drinkers from what I saw in Tokyo) Resveratrol has been shown to be helpful, but the dosage is totally unknown.. one study tested the affect of the amount of resveratrol found in 160 bottles of wine if it was taken daily.

The fact is, you have a certain lifespan, and no one knows what will shorten or lengthen it. Enjoy what you can without being foolish (ie smoking), and do all things in moderation. And post more to VC!

- that works for me! :-)

"Enjoy what you can without being foolish (ie smoking)"
- hey, that's not what one wants to hear that just invested in MO. :-)

On a local news program this evening (radio KLBJ/Austin) they were talking about a study that showed improved mental awareness while playing a competitive video game after the study group had one alcoholic beverage.
More than one drink and the study group's  ability to stay alert and on point was compromised.

My suggestion is to have two glasses to really relax and stay away from video games.

Welcome to VC.

My WII bowling is best after about 2 glasses. After that both me and my video game abilities are compromised. ;)

Wii Baseball is compromised after one.

It somehow never seems that Wii Golf is compromised though... 10 over par? bah... who cares? :)
