N.V. Brushy Creek Vineyards Chardonnay - USA, Texas, Texas Hill Country (6/28/2009)
WIML87-88

Tasted June 28, 2009.

This was a gift from BodegaTejas because he wanted me to taste it and give him my honest, straightforward opinion on the wine. This s NV wine but he noted to me that this particular bottle is a blend of the 2006 and 2007 vintages. CellarTracker shows this wine as an appellation of Texas Hill Country but the winery is actually located in Alvord in North Texas.

Opened and served immediately Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of cotton candy up front with lighter notes of grapefruit and perhaps some mixed yellow fruits. Thought I caught a little paraffin as well. Flavors of citrus fruits dominate the palate. Added notes of what I would call "limestone" and maybe some nutmeg. Fairly crisp on the palate. Medium acidity, light to medium body. Somewhere between a short to medium finish Upon opening I'd say the wine was close to a WIML88. Probably faded a tad towards a WIML87 with some air and warmth.

After tasting this wine and preparing the tasting note we then paired this wine with various light, summer lunch selections. This wine paired really well with lighter styled cheeses like Butterkase, Sage Derby & Spanish Goat Cheese. It was acceptable but not preferred with more robust cheeses such as the Westcomb Red. Triple creams were OK as long as there was ZERO rind. Olives failed. OK with cold meats like smoked ham, roasted turkey and grilled chicken, At the right price point it would make a good summer quaffer chilled around 50F with some lighter styled cheeses. (88 pts.)

That is a pretty good score regardless of the varietal and vineyard locale.  Personally I've never had a Texas wine that scored this well so good for BodegaTejas.

I've scored one Texas wine as high as WIML90.  It can happen if you believe.  Click your heels together 3 times Dorothy.
