| The iPhone has been open for new applications for a couple of months now and dozens of new apps seem to appear every day. Lots of games, of course, but some useful apps, too. As you would guess, there are often several apps that do the same thing – some are better than others (and in some cases, the ‘good’ one hasn’t appeared yet). I know there are a lot of iPhone users out there, so what are your favorite apps so far? For me it is: i41CXp – looks and feels exactly like the HP-41C, my all time favorite calculator people – searches the online white pages and does a remarkably good job of finding addresses and phone numbers. Delivers them in Contact Book format Remote – via WiFi, controls iTunes and AppleTV with a very nice UI SplashID – a password protected vault for all your passwords, PINs, etc. Syncs with the desktop version MeetBubble – sounds silly but this is a very nice little app that works like a level (you know, like for straightening pictures) AirSharing – via WiFi, mounts the iPhone as a drive on your desktop. Good for taking documents with you Wikipanion – a nice little iPhone interface to Wikipedia. I am sure there are others that do this, maybe even better I am also on the lookout for the best conversion program. At the moment I am using iCurrency and Units, but there are probably better ones coming. I am also looking for the ultimate shopping list program. Most of the ones out there are stand alone, where I want one that syncs to my desktop (so I can use the real keyboard). I am currently playing with Zenbe which does the sync part nicely, but you can’t sort the entries on the list, which is not so good. | | | |

AP Mobile News (free)- Great for getting national/local news, with a bunch of different news categories.. only associated press Bloomberg (free) - Great for getting your stock portfolio updates, as well as financial news and market indexes Weatherbug (free) - 3 day weather, weather map, and weather cameras near your area. I was looking at cameras in new Orleans during the hurricane. Now Playing (free) - Movie listings for your area... will find where you are via GPS, and find theaters near you. Has RottenTomato ratings, access to movie previews, etc. Pandora (free) - Uses the music Genome Project to stream music similar to a song or band you specify. very cool app. Sportacular (free) - Great sports specific app for scores and news...
Curious what people use for things like cityguide.
I have: Cityguide, Yelp, and Urbanspoon. Curious what people like best.
Games: Apple's Texas Hold'em is great! Frotz.... brings back the days of text games like Adventure and Zork... and many others.

| I'm an iPhone noob- are there any new apps that you like that I should check out?
One of the things I'm having the most trouble with is productivity. On my previous phone I used an app called Phone Alarm that allowed me to adjust all of my reminders with repetition, sounds, etc. For instance for calendar appointments I want the reminder to go off every 30 seconds or so for about 2-3 minutes so I actually hear it. The same with text messages, missed calls and voicemail. The issue is that the phone is in my purse and I don't need to obsessively check it every minute (unlike my husband who is an iPhone slave).

| Google just released an update to their Google App for Iphone... voice activated search. Works extremely well. I was surprised.
There is also a voice dial app now called "Say Who"
Don't know about the calendar apps out there.... I'd love to have a better one as well.
The Weather Channel just released a free app better than WeatherBug, and they have video of local forecasts which is nice.
The Bloomberg app is great.

| It seems like once an app comes out, 2 or 3 others just like it come out. It is hard to tell which is best. I've been looking for the perfect shopping list program. I want one that syncs with my desktop and makes it really easy to add items. I am using INeedStuff at the moment. My favorite remains the HP41C. Giving Winetex an opportunity to roll her eyes, I really like the calculators that do arithmetic in inches and feet (I am using INCHcalc at the moment). | | | |

I'm not sure. My tests were from about 3, 4 and 6 feet away. So cool! 12 feet worked too!! 20 feet did not work.

| A productivity app that I'm trying before leaving on my trip.
Evernote - a free web app that syncs information to the iPhone and to my PCs. Most of my information is synced from Outlook into my iPhone but for some weird reason it doesn't sync notes. I have all kinds of random info in my notes for mobile access. Especially my champagne vintage charts (LOL). Evernote is a neat way to access the info.

| Shannon, do you connect your iPhone directly to your laptop and sync up contacts and calendar from Outlook? Just curious how that all works because I use Outlook a ton for monitoring email, storing contact information (including numbers to dial), notes, etc... I'm considering an iPhone down the road. | | Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| Yes indeed. I did not consider an iPhone until they had a hi-speed network version and synced with Outlook. All of my contact and calendar information lives in Outlook first.
A downside to the iPhone is an inability to work with Hotmail. I don't like Hotmail very much these days but it is convenient to open in Outlook on my PC. Can't get it to work on the iPhone even through a web interface. This is probably a Hotmail issue. More than likely I'll have my hotmail account email forwarded to my Gmail account.

| yes, gmail and the iPhone are good friends. Joe, if you need to do a lot of email stuff from your phone, that is the weakest part of the iPhone. | | | |
