This January, my wife and I decided to take the unusual step for us and try to get healthy. Eat better, exercise a bit and do other healthy things. We opted to use the Weight Watchers program on the web as a way to help track our progress and get tips to understand what you can eat and in what portions in order to make reaching our goals a success.
 
I have to say, while the first 2 weeks or so were torture, the 'diet' really became quite easy to stick to. Your body gets used to the change and your stomach fills up more quickly just over time as your habits change. And, while we are very good about the diet during the week, the WW program gives you weekly 'bonus points' that we chose to hoard (still do) until the weekend. All of the good cooking and eating occurs from Friday night through Sunday night for us. While we eat anything we want on these weekends, we still tend to be pretty good, and our smaller stomachs tend to help us to not completely overdo it as we just can't eat that much anymore.
 
And the exercising? Piece of cake. Lift weights? No. Run? No. Yoga? Spinning? Tai-bo? No. No. No. Swimming, biking, sports? No. No. No. Our chosen exercise is just plain old walking. I walk 4 miles a session from 2-5 times a week. This is supplemented by working in the yard for a few hours a week, too. That's it.
 
Dining out a problem? Nope. Generally, this is limited to weekends anyway, so it's easy. On the times we 'have to' eat out not on the weekends, you naturally just increase the exercise a tad and skimp on the other meals that day a bit. Piece of cake.
 
So basically, it is all about moderation. It's ok to splurge a bit, as long as you are good most of the time and just do a little exercise. Had I known it would be this easy, I'd have done it long ago.
 
WIML has been sort of my latent inspiration, but all of his talk about working out scared me off. That said, my real inspiration is to get healthy s o that my wife and I will each make it to live to 111, natch.
 
My goal is to lose 64 lbs and to keep it off. I've lost 39.8 lbs so far. I hope to hit the goal by the end of the year.

Thanks y'all! I need to walk an extra lot this week. Had a great dinner yesterday, but also had a nice steak the night before. I need to work it all off now. Oy!

I think my biggest problem these days is keeping my pants from falling down. That and my rather large collection of Hawaiian shirts is now way oversized on me. It looks like I am wearing curtains they are so big.

ABSTRACT

Background Trials comparing the effectiveness and safety of weight-loss diets are frequently limited by short follow-up times and high dropout rates.

Methods In this 2-year trial, we randomly assigned 322 moderately obese subjects (mean age, 52 years; mean body-mass index [the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters], 31; male sex, 86%) to one of three diets: low-fat, restricted-calorie; Mediterranean, restricted-calorie; or low-carbohydrate, non–restricted-calorie.

Results The rate of adherence to a study diet was 95.4% at 1 year and 84.6% at 2 years. The Mediterranean-diet group consumed the largest amounts of dietary fiber and had the highest ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fat (P<0.05 for all comparisons among treatment groups). The low-carbohydrate group consumed the smallest amount of carbohydrates and the largest amounts of fat, protein, and cholesterol and had the highest percentage of participants with detectable urinary ketones (P<0.05 for all comparisons among treatment groups). The mean weight loss was 2.9 kg for the low-fat group, 4.4 kg for the Mediterranean-diet group, and 4.7 kg for the low-carbohydrate group (P<0.001 for the interaction between diet group and time); among the 272 participants who completed the intervention, the mean weight losses were 3.3 kg, 4.6 kg, and 5.5 kg, respectively. The relative reduction in the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was 20% in the low-carbohydrate group and 12% in the low-fat group (P=0.01). Among the 36 subjects with diabetes, changes in fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels were more favorable among those assigned to the Mediterranean diet than among those assigned to the low-fat diet (P<0.001 for the interaction among diabetes and Mediterranean diet and time with respect to fasting glucose levels).

Conclusions Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets may be effective alternatives to low-fat diets. The more favorable effects on lipids (with the low-carbohydrate diet) and on glycemic control (with the Mediterranean diet) suggest that personal preferences and metabolic considerations might inform individualized tailoring of dietary interventions.

Everyone i the family decided to go to Weight Watchers.  I've been at it for 4 weeks, and have lost 12 pounds.  I would have lost more, but I back slid when I went to Philadelphia and ended up eating in restaurants for four days.  (I weigh in tomorrow, (before going to the DC Crü dinner) and think I've lost some th is week too.  I have a very long way to go, but it hasn't been as hard as I thought.  Having to weigh in every week helps, s does knowing I'm paying to do this so I might as well be serious so I'm not wasting my money.

Like all diets I encourage all of you to stay the course, slow and steady. Most important please do combine it with exercise on a regular basis. That's how I've kept it off for 4 years running now and I can't tell you how much better my life has been since I lost all of that weight.

I backslid 3 lbs today. Must have been the dinner with the Crü last night.

I agree, WIML, slow and steady is the way to go and basic levels of some exercise are good. Clearly it has worked for you and so far, so good it has been working for me as well.

Be careful for a couple of days and the extra pounds will probably come off. They come off more easily if you take them off quickly. You don't really add body mass that quickly, it's mostly just food and liquid in your system. But your body will turn it into real body mass if the calories keep coming. This is especially true for people who have lost weight. However, for me, being able to backslide is the main point of the exercise. You just have to manage it. But, you're doing great so it sounds like you've found what works for you.

Well, I weighed in about an hour before we went to the Crü dinner, so I'll see how much damage it did when I weight in at my usual day on Friday.  Here's hoping that being good the rest of the week (well, maybe not on Friday) will make up for it.
