| | Not reliable and inconsistant - shows different results 15 minutes apart. These bugs are starting to get me down. | | I've learned that wherever I go, the world's worst drivers have followed me there. | |

| | The "new and improved" search function is beyond bad. That is one thing that eBob gets right. Come to think of it, I don't have any complaints about their software.  Hubris is another matter. | | | |

| Brad, as you can see by all of the comments "Search" needs work.
Is there anything you can do to upgrade it? Here are the minimum things it should do to effectively work: 1. Chronological search and display - display results by date; right now it displays random results 2. Search by keyword in subject 3. Ability to show many results (50 minimum or so). Not the 20 or so that it shows now
As Dave notes, Ebob has a good advanced search
http://dat.erobertparker.com/bboard/search.php?
as does Wino Depot
http://winodepot.invisionzone.com/index.php?act=Search&f=6
In both of these forums I like the search by "user name"
The current VC search function doesn't compare at all. This is one of the nuts and bolts things that really needs to be fixed.

| | And the spacing is clearly not working in this forum.ÂWhat is that stupid square that shows up after the ? in the second sentence. | | | |

| Returning Search results by thread rather than post is key (better yet, give the user that option).Â
On ebob if you run a search for Kosta Browne Spring, you get 63 threads and can quickly tell which ones relate to the Spring mailer.Â
On VC you get 3 pages of random results, none of which relate to mailers (unless someone happens to mention the word Spring in their post) because the dumb search engine doesn't search thread titles. The old software even gave you the option of limiting your search to thread titles.Â
If you run a search, click on the first hit and then hit the back button to go to the next hit, you lose the search entirely!
I would just disable searching until they come up with a version of this software that works. You may be losing people (from frustration) without even knowing why.

| I tried to search for notes today as I was posting, that I knew even I had posted before, and I couldn't find them. The search sucks, badly. Not to mention that I have to switch to Firefox just to post(of which it is slow as hell compared to safari). Brad, this is a stretch for me to keep on going. Not sure if I should care because even though people may read a tasting note on this site (which is about the whole of my participation), it stimulates no conversation or dialog in comparison to, ohh I bought the new release of xxoo, got the xxoo mailer. I find my self reading, though never posting on e-bob, more and more, because they at least have opinions or something to say. More European focused perhaps, intellectual, even through all the b.s. ? It has become stagnant here.
The most exciting thing to me is having Dan (JW1) back around. As much as we tapped heads in the past, he has opinons and insight that keeps things rolling. I greatly welcome him back.

| I'm with you. Just about all of my participation is in the tasting notes section and most of the time I feel like I'm alone and talking to the wind. Search is frustrating at best and has just about brought me to the point of stopping my posting of tasting notes or just creating a new thread for every note going forward.
"ohh I bought the new release of xxoo, got the xxoo mailer". Man you hit the nail on the head there. Make a post about receiving the mailer on the hottest new wine and you'll get a dozen replies within minutes. Post a tasting note on an Alsatian white and hear the crickets chirp. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

I don't think that has much to do with VinoCellar. Check out the Alsatian notes on other boards. Sometimes I think only you, me, Mike and Jason read them.

| | I think that it has a lot to do with Vinocellar. Tasting notes are ignored by and large unless they happen to be about a recent vintage California wine that everyone owns. My Scarlett Johansson thread had more views in three days than Jason's notes combined. And he posts about some sexy wines! | | | |

| Not totally. I post all of my tasting notes on four different forum. On Wino Depot and Wine Spectator I get regular comments and questions. Mind you not on all notes I post but enough to give me the impression they are valued overall. Here and WinExiles I rarely if ever get a response unless I have the audacity to critisize a darling of the boards.

| I will admit that I don't always read every new tasting note posted but quite often I will do a search for a specific wine I am thinking about drinking. Right now I can't do that.Â
I guess I'm happy that it is a software "flaw" and not something the nut behind the wheel is doing wrong.

| | I've just grown tired of this forum software to be honest. And the traffic on the site pales in comparison to its heyday. I'm not saying that a lot of the posts in the past were not silly, frivolous and stupid, as many of them were (including most of mine), but the community feel here is slipping away. I am sure that you have lots of statistics to look at, Brad, and I am sure you can see what's been happening. Maybe it's time to either drastically improve the current software and email all of your user base (past and present) inviting them back to see a new and improved Vinocellar, or revert back to the old software and do the same. If you don't do one or the other, I am not sure if too many people will care one way or the other what becomes of these forums. I mean, has there even been much activity from the old crew of moderators here? Where are you ojeffso, LCC, jb, and seek? Honestly, I'd rather have the drama of the past with a thriving community rather than have this virtual ghost town to come visit. JMHO. | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com | |

| | I'm not a tech kind of guy so perhaps I'm just missing things but I can't see how this new software is an improvement in any way over the old software. | | | |

Ever since the new software happened, people seemed to move away. I like the old software much better than the new. It's pretty dead here anymore with anything of value. Sorry, just my opinion

| | The only thing that the new software seems to do that the old software didn't is to improve the delivery of ads. That may be enough to carry the day. | | | |
