Same here. It looks like any 'old' topic, when it's hit with a post for the first time with the 'new' forum software, it assumes you haven't read it yet, and takes you to the first post, not the new post.

Yea, even though you may have "Marked as read" you may not have in fact opened a particular thread and read it. So when you do open it when it looks like a new post is in the thread, it won't take you to it because you haven't been in the thread yet.

I believe this is incorrect behavior, and the 'Marked as read' function should then allow you to go to the first unread post.

Yes, the forum software treats an old thread (not yet updated with a post since the transition) as if you haven't yet read any of the posts. After that, it's fine (although it may require resetting the cookies as Brad recommended in another post).

The "jump to" does seem to be working more of the time now. Thanks.

Last night and this morning it isn't working at all. I hate it! I can take three of four times longer to get to the very last post and then I have to take another 30 seconds to figure out how many of the posts are new by reading the date and time they were posted. I could live with it temporarily if at least there was a way to see how many "new" posts had been made since my last visit but that is also gone. Squires has a little clickie to click on that takes you the the last unread thread.

Did I say, "I hate it"? This is a deal-breaker for me.

I have a hard time believing that it is me since it seems to be intermittent. I am on version 2.0.4 of Safari on this, my Mac at home.

Another wish kinda relative: If I'm on the second page of a thread and make a post after the post it takes me to page one of the thread. There was also an option that I always used where it went back to the listing of the all the threads in that catagory. I really thought that saved me clicks and a lot of time.

Okay, it is back to intermittent but still mostly not working.

I have another question that is relatively anal that I just noticed when it did jump to the last post. The only place the title of the thread appears is at the top of the posting. I clicked on the link and it took me to the last post. I must have been so startled that I didn't remember what the title of the post was. I had no idea what people were posting about because the almost of the previous posts just said that they had received whatever it was the post was about.

Didn't the title of the post used to appear between every post? It's not a big deal but you all know I'm an old man and the second thing to go was my memory.

Look at the top bar on your Safari window. It probably contains the title of the thread.

Brad,

I hear you and understand. I don't really understand why I am venting this way. I guess I am just frustrated with this crazy drug that has become a habit. You'll never lose me; there is no way I would be able to live through the withdrawel. It costs a lot of money to check into the Betty Ford Clinic for VinoCellar Addiction.

I am certainly not angry with you. And I don't mean to or want to put pressure on you to hurry. Just tell me to go to Hell! Lord knows nobody has the right to tell you to do anything here. What I should be doing is to put your picture somewhere up in my Shrine to Yquem and every morning when I get up I should face east and thank the esteemed lord and keeper of the vino infobahn for all the cushty moments you have caused for me.

Thanks Brad!

LOL. David... as the four and a half years of Vinocellar have gone by, I've always considered you one of the greats.... so I didn't take your venting personally. How could I? You are DavidN! I'm considering any and all comments, suggestions, vents, etc. as both constructive criticism and motivation for myself to improve this site.

There are many things here I've programmed myself, and many things here I didn't program. The forums are one thing I didn't program, but I have been in discussions with that developer. He is saying the next release of the forums system is going to have many improvements.... search improvements, unread post improvements, "forum unavailable" improvements... etc.etc... further, the "core" or "engine" of Vinocellar (the software piece) is also getting a major improvement to be released next week. So next week after my own testing is done, I'll be doing that upgrade... then a little bit later, the Forums upgrade. So many improvements are to come.

The forums are my main focus... so besides what I need others to do... I can work on the look and feel of the forums... make nice "usability" improvements... such as the title position, better visibility for the links, active topics link on the bottom AND the top....

There is a lot coming down the pipe... it's funny, ever since I finally got the forums migrated, its been all I could think about. I finally can make a REAL WEBSITE.... with good information for the beginner Wino, but a place that's also here for the seasoned winos to share...

So keep that venting coming... and definitely make use of the Feedback Center. If it's not a "closed" item in the feedback center, it means I"m working towards a solution, or a change, or making something better, etc.etc... even if the suggestion doesn't have a comment, I"ve seen it, and am working to make it all better.

The old board allowed you to mark all posts as "read". It seems like that would help in this situation.

This board does as well... but only at the bottom of a a topic view... such as once you click into California TN's... you can scroll to the bottom to see the "mark as read" link. The behavior isn't quite optimal yet... but we are getting there. Stay tuned!

I think the clicker at the end of each thread is much better that the old way. If one looked at a group of threads in a catgagory and didn't have time to read all at that particular seating you couldn't close the catagory without all the threads including the ones that were'nt read all losing there unread marker.

Does that make sense?

If you read only one thread in one of the forums (eg, Wine Commerce), you lose the unread marker on the forum, but the unread threads are still properly marked as unread the next time you enter the forum (unless you click the "mark all as read" link for that forum).

A global "mark as read" button, as in the old software, would make it much easier to start afresh after not reading the forums for a long time.

No venting here, but the inconsistent "jump to unread" does make it hard to participate. Even threads I've read a few hours ago. Is this one of the things that we have to wait for with the next release? Days? Weeks? Months?

Exactly as you said it...   once you have been in a thread....  it'll jump to the correct unread post the next time you go in it.  If you used the "mark all as read" button, it does not set you up as having literally gone into the post... so it won't jump you to the first unread, since really, you haven't read it.  I don't like this functionality as it behaves and am working on getting that corrected.   However, the folders that say if a Forum has new posts in it or not seems all screwed up.   This is what we need to wait for the next release for.... which should only be a couple weeks.

Another thing I noticed is when someone posts a thread from the old forum it will sometimes take me to the beginning of the thread. After that it accurately skips to the "first unread" post.

yes, I've noticed this too and am trying to have the forum developer correct this behavior, but not sure what he'll do yet.

Sooner rather than later... This may be the "forum killer" bug. It's absolutely uninteresting and tedious to fish around for new posts. There is no continuity of posts probably due to the fact they they are so hard to find. When people re-visit the forum after an absence I don't think too many of them want to go through tremendous trouble just to post again and find the interesting new posts.
