I'm excited to announce a new feature at VinoCellar.com.  I've just released the new Wine Links page which contains VinoCellar's Favorite Wine Links.

If you register on VinoCellar.com, or are already registered, you can also add your favorite Wine Links to the database.  These user submitted links by members of VinoCellar.com and placed into a variety of different wine related categories.  So far we have categories for:  Wine Auction Sites, Wine Blogs, Wine Education Sites, Wine Magazines, Wine Retailers, and Wineries too of course!
More categories can be added, just submit a request on the "Contact Us" page.  Soon however, moderators will be selected who can be requested to add more appropriate categories for you.

Though you can currently just add wine links in a specific category, more features are coming:
  • A "My Links" page will be added, in which you can have your own favorite links.
  • A pop-up preview of the web page will show what the page looks like before clicking the link and actually going to it.
  • Wine Link Moderators will be chosen to add/change/delete links as needed.
  • Duplicate detection will be enabled.
I'd love to hear your comments....  and if you have feature suggestions or bug reports, please use the "Feedback Center" underneath the "Help" tab above!

Enjoy!

FYI - This is something I actually programmed, so any features you'd like added are actually very possible.
Further, this small "module" is a stepping stone to much larger, better modules for VinoCellar.

Any reason you do not have an option to view all links of a given type on one page instead of having to page through several pages to see them all (like the winery links)?

No reason... it's a good feature request. :-)

I put the minimum in there to get it released, and then hopefully get feedback like yours to make the improvements that matter most.

Thinking about it, I'll have a "view all" and I'll also have a selectable page size. So you can select to show5, 10, 20 at a time, or 40 at a time, etc.

Then... all the features in this Links module, will be implemented (if it's a good fit), into the other modules I'll be basing off this one.

I also want to do some cool reporting type stuff, but that'll come last after the functionality is complete.

Vintage Guides would be another good category. There are lots of different ones. I've got a bookmark of about 9 different guides as a tab set.

Ok, I've added "Vintage Guides" to the categories.  It won't show up in the main view until someone adds a link within that category.

I've just installed VCLinks 1.00.01 to the site.

Updates include:
  • Added "Page Size" dropdown box.  It will default to five links per page for non-registered users, but for registered users, there is an option to change the page size.  The selected page size for that user is stored in the database, so it will be "remembered" for that particular user.  The max size is 1000 links per page, so hopefully that will cover it.  If not, I could go higher of course.
  • Changed some visual aspects of the Links Page for better look and feel.
As always, any feature requests or bug reports are welcomed in the Feedback Center.

Thanks for your input!

5 is a bit small particularly if you don't have the ability to jump to a specific page. On the plus side, anyone searching for Zayante will earn you a bundle in ad revenue.

There's no way to edit the link name or description

It's lame that it can't just automatically detect and strip off the http://

It's annoying that when you use the browser to go back to the page that all the values got reset to defaults

Ok, great feedback.  I'll make default page_size = 20.

Edit capability is coming...  for the person who created the link, and the link moderators.

Regarding http://...  true enough....   Will modify the input requirements.

Not sure what you mean about the last one...   You mean back to the page you were on when you went to add a new link?  If that's true, I can fix that up...  let me know?

Thanks Dave.

Yes. Example: I entered the 3 BBR pages.
After entering the first I hit BACK in my browser hoping that the form would be as I left it, but it had been cleared.
So I had to re-enter a bunch of stuff.

I suppose I could add a "Submit this link, and add another like it" button of some sort...

Good idea... Going to add your scmwine.wikispaces.com link? :-)

I've just installed an update to the Wine Links page... Version 1.01.00

Updates include:
  • Ability for users to EDIT THEIR OWN LINKS, that they've created.
  • Added a Link Moderator group to VC Roles.  (Volunteers?)
  • Ability for MODERATORS to EDIT ANY LINKS, and APPROVE links.
  • Created a "More Info" page.
    • I may add more to this (such as a captured screenshot of the site)
  • Moved the "Add New Link" button to the top right for better visibility.
  • A lot of back-end stuff and cleanup, so I can use this code in other modules on the site.
  • Modified http:// requirements for adding a url (now set to force inclusion of http, because normally it's a cut/paste from a browser anyway)
To Do:
  • Make it easier to add multiple links.
  • Screen shot of site, to pop-up on link hover
  • Search box
  • Existing Link Validation (to lessen possibility of duplicates)
Any other suggestions?

Thanks, and enjoy.

Updated Wine Links again.
  • Added a label to display the Category that's being viewed.
  • Added moderator funcationality to add new categories as needed. (and delete them)
  • Fixed the bug for moderators as mentioned earlier.  They can now edit all links as they are supposed to. (and approve)

Still have the above To Dos, but they are next now that I've gotten the ability for moderators completed.

How about a catagory for member's personal wine-related web pages?

Great Suggestion!  I'll call it "VC Members Wine Sites"

Thanks, and enjoy.
I've made another update...  VCLinks 01.02.00
  • Added a Validation check for an existing Link Name or existing Link URL
  • Expanded the Category space, making it easier to read the categories
  • Made it easier to add multiple links
  • Fixed some bugs, cleaned up some code, etc.
Not sure a "search" box is necessary... putting that on hold.
Not going to do the website screenshot pop-out just yet either.  Seemed kind of lame when I tested the third party solution I was using.  If I do it, I'll create the thumbnails myself somehow so I maintain full control of the code.

So for now, the links module is done unless I get more suggestions as time goes on.

Enjoy!

(Ok, Ok...  now I'll look at SEARCH)       lol
