Ok, seems I'll do the Restaurant listing first... Here are the fields I think we'll need.

Restaurant Name (Searchable)
Address
City (Searchable)
State (Searchable)
BYO Policy (Yes/Free, Yes w/ corkage at $xx, No BYO)
Restaurant URL
Restaurant URL to wine list if available
Restaurant Type (Searchable): (French / Italian / American / etc.)
Full Reviews by users
Rating 1 to 10
Comments in the form of a forum topic.... linked to from the restaurant listing.

Anything else?

Thanks for your help!!

BYO Policy (Yes/Free, Yes w/ corkage at $xx, No BYO)

add any limit to number of bottles.

add whether or not you get a free corkage with purchase of bottle off the list.

add that even if they do charge for corkage there have been times that the corkage has been waived.

add the old "$$$$$" dollar bit indicating how expensive the place is.

add names of manager and/or somm. if known.

I'm moving right along with this.... have an entry page, a display page, etc.

I'm putting in a option to display potential cost... need some thoughts.

I was thinking of a five $ system. Are these ranges any good?

$ Below $15 per person (It'll really be $14.99)
$$ $15-$25
$$$ $25-$40
$$$$ $40-$70
$$$$$ $70 and above

I can't say I'm really sure these are good numbers.
I'm also thinking this would NOT include the cost of wine/alcohol.

Maybe a three % system for wine markup?

% Marked up 100% or below
%% Marked up %100-200%
%%% Marked up %200 or above

Any thoughts on these ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Is this all food inclusive, or just entree? Including tax and tip or just the food itself?

Since so many restaurants have higher markups, many in the 200-250% range, I'd arrange them as follows:

% Marked up 50% or below (There are some)
%% Marke up 50%-150%
%%% Marked up 150%-250%
%%%% Marked up more than 250% I'd hate to lump these in with the 200% restaurants.

One thing that would be quite useful is some kind of 'freshness' indication. Restaurants change - the cooking gets better or worse, the corkage policy changes, hours of operation change. A static rating might no longer be true a year later. I'm assuming (and hoping) that this forum has a long lifetime, so it would be cool to have some flag that says this rating is 12 months out of date.

I was reluctant to say this since I don't have a great suggestion on implementation, but it would still be nice to have.

Actually... I like that

I could include two ratings... or three or four....

One for "all time rating"
One for "in the last 6 months"
One for in the last year.. etc.etc... or for whatever time period the user wishes....

Good suggestion. Probably won't make the first cut.. but is on the "to do" list for sure. It'd be a unique feature.

BTW... the emphasis will be on BYO Restaurants.... though all restaurants will be included... with also perhaps emphasis on the big boys of NYC, San Fran, etc.

Great idea from Mr. Bressler, there.

I totally agree.

What about a link to Zagat's and OpenTable, so users registered on those sites can easily access those services? Or could you become an affiliate of them and make some $$$$ that way?

A link to a scan of the menu and/or wine list if someone wants to scan them; or a link to the restaurant's web page.

That's a good idea... will definitely link to the web page if there is one. This is going to be the first custom module I build for Vinocellar... I have the database setup, just working on all the different input/display screens.

heh.. reading back... this idea has been on the table awhile... but, as you see... things have been changing lately.... and like I was saying... eventually it'll all be for the better. :-)
