Maybe it's time to retire or archive the superthreads, "What Are You Drinking..." and "Buying Lately" ?

They're becoming ponderous to navigate. Perhaps the last 20-30 posts in each could be kept as the start of new threads, and can be added to. I don't suspect many people go back through the older posts to see what someone bought or drank a couple of months ago.

Just a thought.

I agree. Maybe a monthly or weekly thread on these subjects?

The next time some one has something to post that they bought, I vote that they start a new 1. Good idea.

you know, it really doesn't matter to me, but i fail to understand the difficulty with the very long threads. when i check them. i am always taken to where i left off, so the fact that they are very large is mostly transparent.

I agree with Gus. The site software always brings you to the first new post of any thread, so it really doesn't matter to me how long a thread is.

In these two cases, what you are buying and drinking, I like the long thread. It allows me to do a search on the thread for wines I've purchased recently so I can PM people about the wine if they haven't bothered to post their tasting notes as of yet.

Sorry. I neglected to provide my rationale for the suggestion.

Those 2 threads now load quite slowly for me. Especially if I want to read more than 1 or 2 new posts in either, it just takes a lot longer than any other threads. Also, their width requires me to scroll left and right to see who the poster is, and whether or not there's a title to a post. Hence, my suggestion to begin them anew.

The old ones should be archived for those who may find them of some interest.

I have to agree with Seaquam on the slow loading of threads as they get longer. As Vinocellar gets bigger and begins to take over the world threads like this will slow down the site for everyone.

ok, i understand now. it is interesting that we are actually discussing this since on that other site i remember 2 or more such similar threads going at the same time in the past. it certainly isn't a big deal to me & i can't see why it should bother anyone else, but i could be mistaken about that .

I had evensuggested making these a new top level category, since they tend not to be discussions, but a bulletin board.

Slow loading would suck, I agree. So, in the interests of keeping the folks without high bandwidth connections happy (I have noticed no speed delay on my cable connection), I will switch my vote to -- yes, please let's make a new thread, or maybe change it monthly, or maybe make it another top level forum as suggested.

Hey Folks.

Let's see those stats..... at the bottom of the threads I have the time it takes to load and generate the page.... for the "buying this weekend" thread it took 1.1 seconds.

Is it longer for other people?

If you drink wine, you get smarter....

From the "Drinking tonight" thread:

Generated in 2.782 seconds in which 0.432 seconds were spent on a total of 14 queries. Zlib compression enabled.

Note that I am on a Cable modem, connected to my laptop via a Netgear 802.11b wireless network.
Cheers, y'all

This thread took .164 seconds (less than 25 posts). However when I just clicked on the "51" on the "what are you drinking tonight/this weekend" thread the results were as follows:

Generated in 5.458 seconds in which 0.423 seconds were spent on a total of 14 queries. Zlib compression enabled

This seems a bit long to me. There are only 14 posts on that page but I think the server has to go through all the posts since it has to figure out which posts to send me since the number of posts per page is a user setable figure.

Just for fun, I clicked on the "All" links on the "Drinking" thread. I don't usually do that, but was trying for worst-case scenarios. Here's what I found"

"What are you Drinking":
Generated in 17.24 seconds in which 0.49 seconds were spent on a total of 14 queries. Zlib compression enabled.

That is what I got for the drinking lately thread. Not bad.

I am using a cable modem connection (pure -- as in no wireless network and no network period).
