2002 SPEC'S BURGUNDY TASTING - L'Alliance Francaise, Houston, Texas (1/24/2005)

This was a tasting grouped by currently available 2002 Burgundies in the Southwest market area. The price range was $13-75 and there were some very nice wines in the $45-60 range that merit cellaring. Bear Dalton, the wine manager for Spec's, led the tasting.

2002 White Burgundies
  • 2002 Verget Bourgogne Blanc Terroirs de Cote d'Or - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
This is made from declassified Meursault juice. Light in body with aromas of limestone, spices, lemon and green apple. Pleasant.
    [$13] (86 pts.)
  • 2002 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Village level wine; 1/3 is premier cru wine. Nice wine but hollow in the middle and a bit short on the finish.
    [~$38] (88 pts.)
  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs Gain - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Light gold; Sweet fruit on the nose; Still slightly sulphurous (will dissipate with age) that made it hard to pick out specific flavors. My score is based on good structure and focus. This is a candidate to re-taste again in six months.
    [~$42] (89 pts.)
  • 2002 Verget Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru Hospices de Beaune - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Light gold; Medium+ in weight; 100% new oak used on this wine and it was evident with the toasty vanilla aromas. The richness, texture and concentration of this wine were superb. In the middle hazelnut and almond flavors. The finish was shorter than I expected. I deducted a full point for this. I think it is possible that with age the finish will unwind and it could end up as WOW wine. A question mark.
    [~$58] (92 pts.)

2002 Red Burgundies
  • 2002 Domaine Jean Trapet Bourgogne Passetoutgrain Aminima - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bourgogne
95% Pinot and 5% Gamay; This was so stinky, as in stinky feet, in the glass that I found it hard to even try. On the palate it was peppery and mushroomy. It was described at the tasting as "an acquired taste". Not for me. Blech.
    [~$14] (80 pts.)
  • 2002 Domaine Vincent Girardin Pommard Les Epenots 1er Cru Vieilles Vig - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
Penetrating black cherry aromas with black cherry, oak, mineral and slight coffee flavors. In all a very satisfying wine but with a slightly rustic style. The tasting leader suggested that this will be a 5 year wine (post-vintage so 2007) to try to catch this at its peak but should last 10-12 years in good form.
    [~$55] (90 pts.)
  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus 1er Cru Les - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune
Red ruby in color; Black cherry and chocolate on the nose and palate. A great, complex finish that may hint to what this wine will become with bottle age. Terrific and well-priced for the quality and vintage.
    [~$62] (92 pts.)
  • 2002 Domaine Jean Yves Bizot Vosne-Romanée Village - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
This wine is declassified Echezeaux hand-bottled from an extremely small producer. Dark ruby in color. It had cherry, cherry stone, mineral and earth on the nose which continued throughout the middle. The finish was aromatic and ended on a spicy note. Well-priced and a sleeper buy from this vintage.
    [~$44] (90 pts.)
  • 2002 Domaine Saint Martin Fixin Hervelets 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
Medium ruby color; This is one of Patrick Lesec's wines that are produced at Domaine St. Bart. Lesec chooses the barrels and the winemaking methods applied to this wine. Simple cherry aromas and flavors in a medium weight wine. I think this wine was better in previous vintages. Too rustic and without complexity but pleasant.
    [~$34] (87 pts.)
  • 2002 Georges Mugneret Nuits St. Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Medium ruby in color; Blackberry and a touch of coffee on the nose with cherry, gentle spice, a bit of oak. In the middle more of same with the addition of violets on the finish. A gorgeous wine with a satin texture and great balance. This is probably a 5-10 year post-vintage wine vs. longer. I really liked it and it is relatively well-priced for the quality.
    [~$50] (92 pts.)
  • 2002 Pierre Amiot & Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Not rated because it had too much sulphur. This will probably dissipate over time but it was hard to pick out the flavors. This wine is blended from three different barrels. It is probably about a 90 in score but a ? at this point.
    [~$50]
  • 2002 Pierre Amiot & Fils Clos St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis
No score as I thought it was corked. On the finish I was getting clear wet cardboard but others disagreed. [~$60]

Extra-curricular wines after the tasting
  • 2001 Neal Family Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (92 pts.)

Thanks for the notes, Winetex!

Bouchard's L'Enfant Jesus seems to be one of those rare Burgs that is consistently good across vintages. I tried the '02 in June '04 and liked it alot too.

Cheers,

Otis

Wintex, I much appreciate the notes as well. One of the things I'd like to go poke around with is Burgundy (after I focus on Italy for most of this year). One of the things that I think would be a **GREAT** idea would be for people to upload images of wine labels. I know it would benefit me greatly. I wonder if Rev has thought of this..... hmmmm

We had the '02 Bouchard Baby Jesus a few months ago at a tasting at The Wine Club. There was alot of fruit, but it was beginning to shut down.
