Our tasting group decided to do something a bit different this time. We each threw in $100 and 1 person was in charge of purchasing all the wines for our theme. As you guessed it, the theme was 1988 Dessert Wines and we did them in flights of 4. This is the order we tasted them in and I have indicated my favorites of the night. Some of my notes are brief as I kept getting distracted by the foie gras.

Flight 1

de Malle (Preignac) 750ml – Palest in color of the 4. Very light and airy. Almost has a mineral component. Some floral aromas on the nose. Has a bit of a bite on the finish. Not much of the honey aspect in this one, but lots of acidity.

Suduirat (Preignac) 750ml – Much creamer than the first wine. Smoke on the nose? A very unusual smell. Good acidity on the finish to balance the creamy texture. Candied apricot late on the back of the throat. Mineral, oily note to it.

Coutet (Barsac) 375ml – Most golden color of the 4 in this flight. Much more primary in fruit than the first 2 wines. Tons of nectarine and apricot on the nose. Slight honey tones in the back of the throat on the finish. Strange metal and woodsy notes to it.

Climens (Barsac) 750ml – #1 of the flight, #2 of the night. Least aromatic of the flight. First with noticeable oak. Vanilla aromas. More of the honey than the others. Coats your throat on the finish. Thick and rich. Has an oily component on the nose. Drinks like silk.

Flight 2

Rayne-Vigneau (Bommes) 375ml – Honeyed nose. Butterscotch all over the palate on this one. Very thick and rich. Good acidity with a hint of smoke on the nose.

Sigalas-Rabaud (Bommes) 750ml – Bottle showed slight amount of leakage. Pineapple and mineral components with a fair amount of honey.

Rabaud-Promis (Bommes) 375ml – #1 of the flight. Loads of botrytis on this one. Smoke, mineral, crème Brule and butterscotch nose all over it. Just layers of aromas in this one. Weird plastic note on the finish. Thick and rich. Lacks s just a bit of acidity on the finish. After an hour, it really explodes in the mouth.

Lafaurie-Peyraguey (Bommes) 375ml – This was considered one of the wines of the vintage for 1988. Smoke and honey. This one is so thick it just coats your mouth. So well balanced with high acidity, but tons of richness to balance it out.

Flight 3
Guiraud (Sauternes) 375ml – Hits you with honey right up front. High acid on the palate. Compared to the other 3 in this flight, this one just doesn’t belong. With a bit of air, it is getting caramelized. A very nice wine, but just out classed by the next 3.

La Tour-Blanche (Bommes) 750ml - #2 of the flight, # 3 of the night. Mint (spearmint?) aromas right off. Wow, this one is so thick and rich on the palate. Way too young still. This one has wonderful balance. Coats the throat. With air, it is getting more and more smoky. Beautiful.

Rieussec (Fargues) 750ml - #1 of the flight, #1 of the night. Botrytis nose. Smoke, honey minerals. Best of the night. So lush and rich. Just firing on all cylinders tonight. Caramel and floral notes (maybe lavender).

D’Yquem (Sauternes) 750ml – #3 of the flight, #4 of the night. Lots of vanilla oak on the nose. Very young. Darkest and richest in color of all the wines tonight. Incredible flavors on the palate. It will be like liquid sex in a glass in about another 20 years.

All in all, it was a fantastic night and it seems like it took a few days to come down off the sugar high, but it was well worth it.
