ShaferGuy and his lovely (and tolerant!) wife had a small gathering at their home last night. Attending were Maxy & wife and Carol & me. We also had one of the best retail sales people in town, who takes great care of all of us ... let's call her "winebee", since that's the handle that she created here and has never used.

I'm doing this from my hazy memory, so plan on revisions as other attendees are heard from.

Shaferguy had, quite naturally, the Shafer flowing when we got there ... 2002 Shafer Chardonnay. There was also some delicious Pride Mountain Chardonnay there to greet us.

First Course: Seared Scallops. Delicious, in a soy sauce base, I believe.
-- 2001 Pride Mountain Chard
-- 1987 Kalin Chard
-- 1994 Kalin Pinot Noir

The topic of discussion here was primarily how good -- and surprising -- the 17 year old Chardonnay was.

Second Course: Cheese Plate -- Mrs. SG went mostly with Stinky Cheeses, so we put some wines with them that could stand the abuse:
-- 2001 Turley "Earthquake" Zin
-- 1992 Beringer Private Reserve

The Turley was fantastic, but the '92 Beringer seemed to be a perfect pairing the the stinkier cheeses on the plate, including the blue "Sauternes" and the runny Gorgonzola. Mmmmmmm! Cheese & Cab!

Third Course: Leg of Lamb, with twice-baked potatoes and green bean bundles wrapped in bacon.

We had a hard time getting to this course ... partly due to all the wine that we had to try to manage, and partly due to the fact that most of the participants really REALLY wanted to see Duke beat UConn. The two flights of wine that eventually went with this course were:

-- 1998 Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf du Pape, and
-- 1998 Remirez de Ganuza Reserva (Parker gave this 95, WS called it 86. WS blew the call on this delicious wine!)

... and then, the moment that we'd all been waiting for ...

-- 2000 Guigal Hermitage, trying futilely to hold its own against
-- 1998 Penfolds Grange

These were both too young, but a few hours in a decanter brought them both out of their shells ... and, by the time we were done, the Grange started to show what a truly classic wine is made of. DAMMIT, that was one fine wine! This was, if nothing else, a very good demonstration of styles that can be expressed by the Syrah grape.

By now Duke had long-since fallen to UConn, dinner was digesting nicely, and we all seemed to have a contented ... uh, "glow" about us. So, time to bring out the dessert and accompanying wine!

Dessert Course: Chocolate doughnut with a center lake of molten chocolate. This can't be its real name, but it's what it looked like to me ... and I want to have it again, as it was absolutely to die for! And with it, we had:

-- 1983 Graham Vintage Port

As you can see, Shaferguy and his wife (Ellen) outdid themselves. The five of us that were lucky enough to join them for dinner all seemed to have a great time and enjoyed probably the single greatest wine lineups I've ever had the pleasure to participate in, without a disappointing wine in the lineup.

Thank you, Shaferguy!

Cheers, y'all
