The best John Ash can do for us is give us a semi-private room with two tables (11 per table) at $1800 minimum.  They can't budge from this because it's Friday night.  The $1500 minimum option I was originally quoted was for a space this is exposed to the outside, with space heaters.  I don't think anybody wants that option in February.  The $1800 space is fully enclosed in glass overlooking the vineyards (are the vineyards lit??), and has heaters as well.

So, if we do the 5 course dinner at $68/person, plus the $300 corkage, we end up at $1796, just under the minimum.

The final cost is $2327.40, which comes out to $105.79/person.

I need to confirm in the next day or so.

The Sun Porch is one table, more private, but the final cost is $117.55/person, and they don't have an option for a 6th course, so we'd be getting the same food....just $12 more per person....for the private room....with one table.

Sorry folks!  If we had a few more attending this dinner we'd be better off!  Come on Drew.....let the relatives know you are costing your friends money by not attending!

Chris;

$105 is not bad for what we are getting, and I think that is really only about $5 more than last year. When you consider he whole package where we are getting the rooms for $145 and don't have to travel to the dinner - well worth it. Plus, I thought the food was great at John Ash last year.

Ack!  AlohaJ can't make John Ash.....so now I'm down to 21.

So David....since this was YOUR idea in the first place..........how about you come up with another couple that can join us on Friday night?  With just 21 we are now talking $110.80/person.  If anybody else is wavering about Friday night please speak up now.  Once I confirm any contracts you are on the hook for that amount...whether you show up or not!

Willi's Wine Bar anybody??

As I messaged (I guess after you posted this) I am not 100% out for Friday, but I won't know for a few days. Just giving a heads up so that everything isn't set in stone, and then I screw it up. Believe me I want to come so Winetex and I can share some Burgundy(what I would be bringing)

Well, assuming I can make it. I will throw my hat in the ring. I am in for most likely two of the three:
2003 Leflaive Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet
1988 Rene Engel Clos Vougeout
1990 Bouchard Volnay Cailleret Cuvee Ancienne
or a early '80s Auslese if you prefer.

Jason, you're not doing yourself any favors.  If you don't make it now I'm going to be REALLY pissed!

Assuming there won't be a mad rush for 4-6 more joining us I'm going to confirm the other room for $1800 minimum tomorrow.

I'll wait for the final head count the week before the events to let everybody know the final prices.  Once I have the menu confirmed I'll post a new thread with the final details.

Here is an odd request. Would anyone coming up to the cave dinner from the bay area happen to have any business ( pick up/drop off) at Winecommune that week? I have ~ 18 bottles on will call and I would like to avoid going into Oakland from Bodega Bay if possible.

I have to pick stuff up at PC in Emeryville on my way up. Is WC somewhat close? If so I can pick them up for you.

WC is one exit away from where I work. They are off Hegenberger by the Oakland Airport. I don't mind dropping by to pick it up either. 18 bottles, not 18 cases, right?

I just have to tie a string around my finger to remember!

Mountainman, PM me for details of your auction items. I need to drop by to pick up a bottle for myself and a friend. I will probably pop over Mon or Tues so I can store in my cellar at home until the event.

Chris,  I know I'm late with my comments, so feel free to ignore them  Unfortunately, business is getting in the way of reading the wine boards.

In an earlier post, you describe the $1800 room as "semi-private".  Do you know exactly what that means ?  One nice thing about the Sun Porch is we could wander around tasting everyone's wines before dinner, in something like a reception setting, and then get up and try what we wanted during the meal, even if the bottle was at the other end of table.  Will the less-expensive option give us the same opportunity, without disturbing the other restaurant patrons (too much) ?

One thought that just occurred to me is to invite a few of our host wine makers from Saturday night (or even some different winemakers) to join us as our guests at John Ash on Friday.  I certainly wouldn't mind paying the extra $15 or so per person as my share of their dinners.

Just a thought ...

Scott
