I'm in, schedule permitting ! Here is Randy's summary of the wines we had at the first 2001 Smackdown ...
Hey Y'all, here are the flights last night, in the order of votes. Also some personal notes on some of the wines. VC Favorites Neal Second Chance - Top vote getter. An excellent wine with what I consider a "rutherford dust" character, notes of tobacco.
Bressler - A very close second. On my notes, I wrote "Wow!". Deep, round flavors, and a very long finish.
Jones Family - My personal favorite of the flight, this wine needs age. Chocolate notes with a luscious sweetness.
Anomaly
Marinus Laube's Loves Insignia - Beautiful, just well rounded, excellent all the way through and through.
Pride Reserve - Tied with Insignia for first place, but behind on second place votes. A great great bottle. My #1 of the flight
Montelena - definitely a different style
Les Pavots - very thick and mouth filling
Harlan Maiden - My biggest surprise of the evening. I found strange metallic notes on this. Not enjoyable for me. Parker's picks Foley Claret - Deep, full, rich. My #1 of the flight. Hourglass - A very close second, with a superlong finish.
Switchback Ridge - a controversial wine. Something odd about one of the bottles - it seemed corked.
Rudd - A very good wine, just outclassed in this flight.
