Opened and served immediately in a house provided Champagne flute if you want to call it that. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout with a light mousse. Nose of biscuits, pears and apples. Flavors of tart yellow apples, pears and lemon. Light to medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink over the short term. Tasted twice over the past month with consistent notes. (88 pts.) Spanish Whites 2004 Bodegas Naia Naiades Rueda - Spain WIML91,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of pineapple, lemon and peach. Flavors of apricots, peaches and light lemon notes with some underlying minerality. Light to medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink over the short term. Best white wine of the evening. Estimating the price to be around the $20.00 mark I’d say the value here is recommended. (91 pts.) 2005 Vina Somoza Valdeorras Selección - Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras WIML87,NOWA, NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Unusual that is quite floral in nature but virtually no fruit showing. Light fruit flavors of apricot, passion fruit and some minerals. Light acidity and body. Drink over the short term. (87 pts.) 2005 Itsas Mendi Bizkaiko Txakolina - Spain, País Vasco, Bizkaiko Txakolina WIML85,NOWA,WS85 Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Extremely light nose of grass and grapefruit. Light and singular flavors of gooseberry. Light acidity and body as well. Drink now. (85 pts.) 2005 Quinta do Feital Vinho Regional Minho Auratus - Portugal, Minho, Vinho Regional Minho WIML87,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Light nose of citrus fruits. Simple and straightforward flavors of grapefruit and lemon. Light to medium acidity. Light bodied. Drink now. (87 pts.) Spanish Reds 1995 Bodegas Carlos Serres Rioja Reserva Onomastica - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja WIMLNR,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Odd nose that was dominated by fennel with maybe some notes of mint and perhaps Kirsch. Flavors of bitters dominate with maybe some black licorice/anise notes. “Flat on the palate with little tannins. I question the provenance on this bottle so I’m withholding a rating. NR (flawed) 2005 Bodegas Zabrin Grenache Calatayud Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines - Spain, Aragón, Calatayud WIML88,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of blueberries, blackberries, cocoa and anise. Flavors of blackberries, black licorice and Bing cherries. Medium acidity with firm tannins. Medium bodied. Drink over the short to medium term. Tasted twice with remarkably consistent notes. (88 pts.) 1996 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero WIML85,NOWA,WS92 Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Brett nose dominating, can’t really identify any fruit here. Flavors of blackberries and maybe some cherries. Light to medium acidity, medium tannins and light to medium body. Drink now. (85 pts.) 2003 Celler Marti Fabra Empordà-Costa Brava Masia Carreras - Spain, Catalunya, Empordà-Costa Brava WIML92+?,WA94,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of melted black licorice, mixed berries and red plums. Flavors of mixed berries, licorice and just a touch of minerality on the finish. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink now with a decant or hold over the mid-term at a minimum. (92 pts.) 2001 J.M. Fuentes Priorat Gran Clos - Spain, Catalunya, Priorat WIML93,WA93,WS93 Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Really attractive in the glass. Nose of acacia flowers, dark plum and a jumble of dark brooding fruits. Flavors of plums, black currants and black berries. Maybe just a hint of bitters on the fairly long finish. Medium acidity balanced well against good tannins. Full bodied indeed. Drink now wine an extended decant or preferably hold 2-3 years before trying again. (93 pts.) 2001 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja WIML89?,WA94,WS86 Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose with some notes of black berries, maybe some Kirsch. Not sure what else??? Flavors of black berries, Bing cherries and a slightly earthy finish. Medium acidity, firm tannins and medium to full bodied. Drink now with short decant. Should hold for quite a few years. (89 pts.) 2003 Celler Joan Simó Priorat Les Eres Vinyes Velles - Spain, Catalunya, Priorat WIML93,WA92,WS91 Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Huge nose of crushed black currants, dark plums, black berries and just a little smoke. One unusual thing that didn’t fit this profile was I thought I picked up on a somewhat pleasant aroma of menthol as well. Flavors of chewy blackberries, licorice, plums and black cherries. Good acidity and tannins with a medium to full body. Well balanced. Drink now with a short decant or maybe hold another year. Should drink well for several years. (93 pts.) 2001 Quinta Quietud Toro DO - Spain, Castilla y León, Toro WIML88-89,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose has just a touch of brett on it followed by some leather notes and roasted meat. Flavors of black licorice and black berries maybe? Medium acidity, firm tannins and full bodied. Maybe a decant would help here? Decant or hold. (88 pts.) 2004 Celler Can Blau Montsant - Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant WIML91,WA90,WS87 Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of smoked meats, a touch of perfume and raspberries. Flavors of raspberries, red plums, red licorice and just a touch of mocha on the finish. Medium acidity, good tannins, medium to full bodied. Good balance overall. Drink over the short to mid-term. (91 pts.) 2002 Cavas del Castillo de Perelada Empordà-Costa Brava Reserva - Spain, Catalunya, Empordà-Costa Brava WIML87-88,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of green olives, thistle and anise. Flavors of black licorice, mixed berries and cherries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. (87 pts.) 2004 Quinta Quietud Toro DO Corral de Campanas - Spain, Castilla y León, Toro WIML89?,NOWA,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Meaty nose with some notes of currants and brown spice. Flavors of black berries and black currants. Medium acidity with huge tannins. Medium to full bodied. I’d recommend holding 1-2 years to see if the tannins resolve a bit. (89 pts.) 2001 Bodega Numanthia Termes Toro Numanthia - Spain, Castilla y León, Toro WIML~92,WA95,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Meaty nose with aromas of brown spice, smoke, dark plums and cassis. Flavors of blackberries, black cherries, black licorice with a little toasty oak kind of flavor on the finish. Good acidity but those tannins are still pretty big. I’m beginning to wonder when and if they’ll ever integrate fully. Full bodied wine for sure. I had planned on drinking one of my bottles this year but I’m debating on extending that until 2008 or at the minimum waiting until the end of 2007. (92 pts.) 2004 Alonso del Yerro Ribera del Duero - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero WIML90,WA94,NOWS Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose fo figs, cardamom and a bit of perfume. Flavors of black cherries mostly. Medium acidity with firm tannins. Seems full bodied. It should have been served before the 2001 Numanthia. Hold a year and retry at that time. (90 pts.)
