The Cru did a dinner at Kaz Sushi Bistro in DC in '05 I think and we did sushi and champagne. Anyone interested in doing this for January? I'll be happy to set it up. Weekday...weekend?? Suggestions on sushi restaurants in DC? Kaz again? Sushi-Ko? Any others?

Chime in....

personally, i'm not a sushi guy (although my wife loves it and probably is a bit of a sushi snob, having lived in NYC for 10 years), and come january i'm usually ready to give champagne a rest for a few months. but i'll watch the thread and try to attend just about whatever is decided.

You know I'm certainly interested! What dates did you have in mind (I think mid-late January would work better for folks)? I think restaurant week is also sometime in January, so I'd try to work around that as well.

The weekend of January 19/20 is best for me, but other days will also probably work. I beleive RW is the week of January 8-14. I understand what newsguy is saying, but how can you have too much champagne?

Best idea ever. I am game depending on the date. Will likely bring a 1990 VC Grande Dame. Either restaurant is fine with me. Whichever one is most accommodating regarding the wine would be my pick.

Mrs. T and I can do any Saturday night in January except Jan 6th. Once we get a consensus of what works for the Cru, I'll contact both Kaz Sushi Bistro and Sushi-Ko to see what their corkage policies. As I recall, when we went to Kaz's a few years ago, they were dismally short on champagne flutes and I'd not expect it to have gotten much better.

Just a thought....Kaz's place supposedly has a very good sake list...maybe we can do champagne and sake? Does it make sense to combine the two??

I'm game as long as we don't have to actually drink any.

How about champagne and burgundy? Always a good decision.

I'm going to be away on the weekend of MLK weekend, but anytime after that I should be able to make it.

Now this is an idea I like, especially considering I missed out the last time. But I cannot contribute flutes as mine stink.

I have to check with Mrs. TJ for availaility, but I am pretty sure she'd want to attend too!

January is already full of holiday overflow events, but if anything can get us out, its champagne and sushi.

I talked to Mrs. TJ about this and she'd really like to attend. BUT, if at all possible, she'd like to do it on a weekend night as she doesn't want to have to work on the day following one of these events. For example, we went to a special dinner at Komi last night celebrating sparkling wines and today she took off.

So, what weekend will it be?

Why don't we schedule the dinner for Saturday, January 20th? This date appears to work for for all. I'll touch base with both Kaz Sushi Bistro and Sushi-Ko to see what they'll charge for corkage and if they could do a group of 10-12 as well as what times they have available.

Hope the Cru had a great XMAS, Channukah, Kwanza or Festivus....whatever you celebrate.

Here's what I found about Sushi and Champagne in DC...

Sushi-Ko...can't do a Saturday night as they're too busy and the restaurant is too small. They can do any Mon-Wed in January. The chef will do a menu for us at $60 plus tax and tip and no corkage. He sounds like he's done this before and seems interested.

Kaz Sushi Bistro...can do a Saturday night but not on Jan. 20th as that's still Restaurant Week in DC. Any other Saturday will work for them. We'd have to eat a la carte and pay $20/bottle corkage.

So having thrown in these two monkey wrenches, whaddaya all think? The only other time we did this, we went to Kaz, so I'd be up for trying Sushi-Ko but can go along with what the group consensus is.

Looks like Sushi-Ko offers the fewer negatives. That would get my strong vote. Shall we shoot for something after restaurant week?
