Damn Al, thanks for catching that - typo on my part! I'll contact Wente.

Ok, all set for 18 people, I've edited my post above. Dave's schedule is still kinda up in the air, so hopefully he'll make it.

See everyone tonight!

Well, THAT was a lot of fun! What a great evening! Outstanding wines, unbelievable food/price/service from Wente, and a fantastic group! Thanks to everyone for coming out to play on a week night!

I cannot speak highly enough about the treatment we got from Wente. They handled our large group of 18 without a hickup, even handing late arrivals with extreme efficiency and transparancy. The food was as I've come to expect from Wente - excellent, but jeeze! the price?!?! Pre Fixe three course menu, three selections per course, for $25??!?!? And all corkage waived! OMG! Even with a very generous tip the total was the stunningly low price of $40/head Thanks to R8der for setting things up!

I took note of all the wines, but took no notes about the wines. I'll list them first, then provide some comments from memory in a seperate post:

2004 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso

I agree 100%. Great company and food/service. And fantastic wines! I have some notes i'll try to post today.

Thanks R8der and Eric for organizing, and futronic for giving us an excuse to do this.

By the way - at those prices we should be doing this every month at Wente. Took me a good hour and a half to get home though due to traffic on the bay bridge - only one lane open, detour through SoMa...

Yep, fantastic dinner. I'd also like to give my thanks to r8der, eric, futronic, and to everyone who came. We lucked out on the prices because they had some special promotion this week (and because r8der got the corkage waived). Alas, we won't be getting that deal every month.

Last night is going to cost me in the long run.....I had no idea I'd take to these old Italian wines so readily! Wow.....there were some incredible wines last night! One of those from 1964 was simply excellent....I don't remember which one.....but I was shocked with how much life was left in it!

Since we had a designated driver I drank more than I should have.....a tad hung over this morning....but it was worth it! Thanks everybody for bringing such incredible wines! I'm not surprised if wine was left over in droves.....23 bottles for 18 people.....whew!

We liked the deal at Wente's so much that a group of us are going back tomorrow!

Some brief notes on the wines from memory:

2004 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso
A wine previously totally unknown to me, evidently Erbaluce is the grape. I really enjoyed this clean, dry, refreshing wine. Very minerally, slate and citrus notes, steely, really nice.

NV Fontanafredda Blanc de Blanc
A really nice bubbly! Very fresh and bright.

1992 Cambria Chardonnay, Reserve
A wine that was not without interest, but clearly in decline.

1993 Giacosa Barbaresco Gallina di Neive
I really enjoyed this young Barbaresco, which still has a long bright future in front of it. Despite that, it was no crime to consume this now, a balanced wine, with excellent structure, spice, and floral notes.

1990 Prunotto Barbaresco Montestefano
I was really surprised how young this wine was showing! It could easily have been mistaken for a wine only a few years old. Very dark in color, plenty of stuffing both in terms of fruit and tannin, nose of roses and spice and dark plums, very nice.

1958 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo
My oldest Italian wine to date, and it didn't disappoint. The color was a translucent faded pinkish/ruby, and that nose! Like no wine I've ever smelled. Very complex, with notes of ripe cheese (sounds weird, but that's what I got), floral notes, and delicate sweet red fruits. Just delightful on the palate, with such smooth fine texture that it makes one smile . The finish is a bit clipped, but what a delightful experience.

1964 Borgogno Barolo Riserva
I enjoyed this lovely wine nearly as much as the '58, a really wonderful example of aged Barolo retaining both fruit and tannins. Sweet delicate red fruit, roses, and lavender notes lead into a palate that is finely textured and utterly beguiling. The nose is one I can be happy just sniffing for a long while, only to be even more impressed with the fully integrated palate.

1964 Gaja Barbaresco
I was originally a tad concerned for this wine, as the cork was somewhat depressed, but my concern was clearly misplaced - the cork came out fine, and the wine was not only fully intact, but still young and vibrant! Stunning color, the wine is very dark purple without much (any??) sign of age! (disclaimer, lighting in the room wasn't optimal). The nose possesses plenty of dark fruits and spice, while to my surprise the palate was still quite tannic! A balanced wine, with great structure and length, my only uncertainty is if fruit will outlast those big tannins? Probably, but I think it needs more time.

1988 Marcarini Lasarin Nebbiolo della Langhe
This wine never seemed to open up to me, it was quite closed down on both the nose and the palate, and difficult to evaluate. Good texture though...

1997 Oberto Barolo Vigna Rocche
I found this wine to have one of the "prettiest" noses of the night - dunno how else to describe it, just pretty flowers and "stuff". Drinking surprisingly well now.

1997 Brico Asili Barbaresco
Also drinking very well young (is this typical of the 1997 vintage?), excellent structure, dark fruits and spice.

2001 Patrimo del Feudi de San Gregorio
Woah! What's this monster? The wine is black black black! Huge nose with all kinds of aromas, coffee, wild berries, plums, and plenty of spice. Equally large-scaled on the palate, broad and full, kind of "wild", with big, ripe, tannins that are surprisingly unobtrusive, and racy acidity to support it all - I like!

2001 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate
On the nose I found this wine to be surprisingly ripe - seemingly over-ripe, almost pruney. On the palate however is where the real pedigree shined through - really stunning texture, the wine is structured and complex, very broad and rich, but with a lot of depth, and a long long finish. I honestly cannot make an educated guess as to aging, but my instinct tells me not to worry about that ripeness character and to have faith in structure of this wine.

2001 Damilano Barolo
After some serious decanting this wine was seriously yummy stuff. Oh so young, nice complexity, balanced, classic tar and roses, along with an almost candied red fruit aspect (this doesn't quite capture it, but it's as close as I can get - I usually consider candied character a negative, which this was not).

2005 Sandler Syrah, Bennett Valley (Chandler? vineyard)
Bravo Ed! Very Northern Rhone-ish, packed with black and white pepper, herbs, and wild berries. Too much pepper for some, not for me! Excellent balance, racy fresh acidity - gunna be a winner!

1995 Oakford Cabernet Sauvignon
Loaded with green bell pepper and dill, yuck.

2005 Fritz Haag Riesling Kabinett
Wow, I never would have guessed this was a Kabinett, more like a Spatlese - maybe even an Auslese! Terrific stuff.

2005 Turchi Syrah
2004 Core Elevation Sensation
2004 Core blend 163
2005 Core Tempranillo
2004 Core Candy Core

I've written about these Core wines before so I won't go into detail here, they all lived up to my previous experience (I did not taste the Candy Core last night). The Tempranillo is still a pretty seriously tannic beast, but with everything to support it. The Elevation Sensation is one damn tasty wine!

1970 Climens Barsac
What a nice treat to finish the meal! And this paired wonderfully with the pumpkin cheesecake. Very dark amber in color, this started out with some very funky notes - so much so that my initial reaction was to think it was corked! Thankfully the funk blew off, and the wine was very enjoyable, but I would think it is time to drink this sooner than later.

(here goes creating a cellartracker tasting event... crossing fingers)

PIEMONTE WINES WITH FUTRONIC - The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards, Livermore, CA (11/8/2006)

A group of wine lovers got together to drink wines from Piemonte with Jay (aka futronic), who was visiting from Toronto. In attendance were members of VinoCellar, BAWE (Bay Area Wine Enthusiasts), winemaker Dave Corey, and a few oddballs such as myself. Rather than flights, the wines were passed around all night, very roughly in order of vintage, with Barbareschi first and then Baroli. Additional (non-Piemonte) bottles appeared now and then as well. The food -- a prix fixe with several choices of starters, entrees, and dessert -- was very good. I went with the Caesar salad with garlic croutons and shaved parmigiano reggiano; Rustichella bucatini with chanterelles, salsify, green chard, cinderella pumpkin creme and Winchester aged gouda; and chocolate decadence.

Starters
  • N.V. Fontanafredda Blanc de Blancs - Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte
I think Jay said this was chardonnay, but the Fontanafredda website just says "a blend of white grapes." Sweet, ripe stone fruits, fine bubbles, good cut. Didn't get any yeast or toast flavors, but tasty sweet fruit and a nice palate cleanser. Reminiscent of, and probably better than, a good slightly off-dry Prosecco.
  • 2004 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Erbaluce di Caluso
A friend took a punt on this due to it being a Neal Rosenthal import, and I went in for a bottle as well. Golden yellow in color. Initially this was a dead ringer for a stony, dry Loire chenin -- great minerality, ripe golden fruits, honeyed finish. With time in the glass an unusual mouthfeel and spicy, bitter almond note appeared. Very interesting and complex wine. Excellent, and a QPR find at $14.
  • 1992 Cambria Chardonnay Reserve - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
Oxidized flavors of caramel, nuts, cloying golden fruits, vanilla. This gets a yuck from me.
  • 1995 Oakford Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Candied nose, maybe some VA. Sweet cassis, overly candied black fruits, some oak. Not into this.

Barbareschi
  • 1958 Marchesi di Barolo Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
A ghostly, translucent ruby-pink color. Soaring aromatics of strawberry, dried flowers, and some funk. Wonderful dried strawberry, brown butter, balsamic flavors on the palate. Completely resolved tannins. Amazing intensity and flavor for a nearly 50 year-old bottle of wine. Turns slightly tart, cranberry on the nice, if somewhat brief finish. Would loved to have spent all evening with this. Outstanding, and my wine of the night.
  • 1964 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Delicate nose of tart red berries, with a slightly medicinal note intruding. On the palate sweet strawberry, raspberry and cherry with hints of roses and some funk. Finishing again slightly medicinal. If this bottle is representative, I'd recommend drinking relatively quickly after opening as it became a bit spicy and strange as it sat in the glass. Heavy sediment in the bottle. Very good.
  • 1964 Gaja Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Oddly dark in color for a 42 year-old wine -- which has me wondering what is in here besides nebbiolo. Somewhat closed nose of red and black fruit liquor, kirsch. Big fruits on the palate, kirsh, plums, leather, moderate concentration with a very sweet palate impression. Wonderful acidity, great balance, a bit of structure left. Very good++
  • 1988 Marcarini Langhe Nebbiolo Lasarin - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe
Nice sweet-tart red fruits. Cranberry, pomegranate, finishes sweet but short. Not a lot of complexity, but drinking well. Good.
  • 1990 Prunotto Barbaresco Montestefano - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Darkest nebbiolo so far seen at this tasting. Huge, ripe nose with candied black fruits and plums. Sweet black fruits, dred roses on palate, surprisingly young. Big tongue-numbing tannins clamp down on the finish. Needs lots of time. Good+?
  • 1993 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Gallina di Neive - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Translucent cherry color. Young nose of sharp red fruits, dried flowers. On the palate, sweet, fresh red berries with an almost chalky tart sensation that is nonetheless pleasing. Wonderful, crystalline purity of fruit that is only marred by a slightly awkward note (heat?) on the finish. My feeling is this would have resolved with more air. Clearly a very young wine, this is nonetheless excellent now and should be even better with time.
  • 1997 Azienda Bricco Asili (Ceretto) Barbaresco Bricco Asili - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Red fruits, violets, kirsch. According to Jay this sees 100% (or thereabouts...) new oak barrique. If so then to my palate it has integrated well, as only the super-silky palate impression and mouthfeel gives this away. Overall the profile feels a bit compressed still, but the tannins are surprisingly melted away. Well, either that or the ten wines tasted previous to this have killed my palate. Very good+

Baroli
  • 1997 Andrea Oberto Barolo Vigneto Rocche - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Nose is a bit grapey, but with very nice floral notes. A bit primary at this point, though drinking nicely otherwise. With time in the glass this became more tannic. Needs time. Good+ (for now)
  • 2001 Damilano Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Closed nose. Nice sweet red fruits with floral notes and good supportive acid on the palate. Finishes a bit short, probably due to tannins. Needs time. Very good (for now).
  • 2001 Elio Grasso Barolo "Vigna Casa Mate" Ginestra - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Surprisingly dark in color. Highly aromatic nose just jumps out of the glass with estery and somewhat overripe aromas of kirsch, dark fruits, hint of raisins. Big on the palate with more sweet kirsch, raw meat, dried flowers, lots of extract. Again the fruit seems a touch overripe, but ample structure and balancing acidity keep it from becoming jammy. Not a trace of heat. Overall this feels "big" for a Barolo, and the fruit is lacking some freshness. But if you can overlook this, it's still a fantastic, complex young wine that is drinking very well at the moment. Excellent.

With Dessert
  • 1970 Château Climens - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
Burnt orange, dried apricot, oxidized flavors of nuts and caramel. This seemed a bit corky to me, but no one else seemed to think so. Good.
  • 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo Irpinia IGT - Italy, Campania, Irpinia IGT
Very dark, nearly black in the glass. A young, tannic monster, but there's clearly a lot packed in here. Coffee, spices, and god knows what else surround a dense core of sweet red fruits, but everything is completely shrouded in tannin. Pie spice on the finish. Apparently this is Merlot....who knew? Potentially excellent, but needs many years.

Several of Dave Corey's wines also made the rounds, but somehow only the Elevation Sensation seemed to park in front of me for long enough to get a taste. This was more structured and interesting than the '04 Core 163 I tried recently, which was delicious but perhaps over the top. Also an '05 Haag caught my eye but was empty by the time I tracked it down.

Overall this was really a fantastic evening with lots of outstanding wines. Many of these are wines I'd have loved to spend the entire evening with. My WOTN was the '58 Marchesi di Barolo, followed by the '93 Giacosa and the '01 Elio Grasso. Big thanks to R8der and Eric for organizing, and to Jay (futronic) for giving us a reason to get together. Bravo!

Agreed with others, it was a great night. Amazing that we got out just $40 down.

The old wines were a treat, and it was fascinating to see the similarities among Nebbiolo-based wines of all ages.

Damn, a 42 year old wine which needs more time, and questionable as to whether or not the fruit will outlast the tannins.

Any chance this was made by Randy Dunn?
