An hour and a half to go. Everything is ready. I just have to cut the bread and cut the cheese. (DON'T SAY IT, JB!) Pretty soon I'll decant that Martinelli. We are going to use a hell of a lot of glasses. Someday I'd like to hear your band, jb.

The evening went perfectly except for two things. I slightly overcooked the duck breast. I usually make it in a heavy cast iron pan, but for 6 people, I neded a larger sautee pan and m timing was off a little. I like to serve it medium rare and it wound up being almost medium, but not dried out. Secondly, there was one semi-tragedy of the evening. The 1978 Richebourg from the DRC was madeirized. I bought three bottle of it in 1981. Shortly after buying them, two of the bottles began to ooze and I opened them. They were fine, but far too young. I discovered a month ago that this last one was now oozing and probably had been oozing for a while. There was an inch and a half ullage, but some of that speace was probably never filed with wine. Anyway, the kitchen sink drank it.

We replaced the Richebourg with a '97 Ridge Lytton Springs from the cellar. The wine was a little cool, but I needed to pick something that wouldn't need much breathing time.

The kybo's 9 year old son was a pleasure. They should be proud of the polite young gentleman they're raising.

Wonderful. And, sorry for the Wine. But, happens, we all know.

I hope this is ONLY the Beginning of the TNs (Wine especially).

Here are a few notes I made on the wines:

1995 Veuve Cliquot Vintage Reserve:
yeasty nose, mature, balanced, 92

1999 Beringer Sbragia Reserve Chardonnay:
surprisingly deep gold color, elegant, could use a drop more fruit, complex, ready, 92

1980 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet:
spicy nose, rich, wonderful, complex, in its prime, 95, my WOTN

1966 Chateau Latour:
a little astringent, complex, powerful, 93

1999 Martinelli Reserve Pinot Noir:
nose of cherries and vanilla, floral, expansive, and, oxymoronic though it sounds, elegant AND powerful, 94

1998 Hillebrand Estate Riesling Ice Wine:
fruity, sweet, uncomplicated, 92

1979 Chateau d'Yquem:
rich, honeyed, complex, 94

I didn't rate the 1985 Graham's Port, the madeirized 1978 Richebourg (DRC), or its replacement, the 1997 Ridge Lytton Springs.

first, thank you very much board-o. the man is a great chef and host. i also discovered he has a great baseball card collection and over 500 signed baseballs. one day on random thoughts he should discuss this aspect of his life. it was very impressive.

it was nice to see mrs.board-o (who happens to be a saint) and the kybeauxs once again. i told kybeaux i like his new spelling. their son was a perfect little gentleman.

yes, we were bummed out about the 78 drc, but their was still no shortage of wine. tasting notes will follow.
