FOOD is the main draw for me to New Orleans so I am wondering about reservations (do we need some.) I have heard that the Commanders Palace is a must but if there is a new must or a better must please lead me to it. It may seem premature to be thinking about reservations for July but I want to make sure that I do not miss out on one delicious morsel of New Orleans cuisine while I am out there.

Nothing is off limits! Cajun, french, and local hole-in-the-walls are all on my wish list. Please advise!!!

I would recommend posting this same note over on chowhound.com and perhaps eGullet.com. Both are 'foodie' websites that have loyal and activae participants...

Thanx for the advice on the "foodie" links. Maybe I will leave gfleener here to covort with all you wine-os and find some of my own kind there. Kidding... I am really looking forward to our trip to New Orleans and meeting some of y'all.

Katy,
Your post is a little ambiguous. Are you interested in the July event? If so last day to commit is May 4.
We have 57 in now and have room for seven more.

i wouldn't come to new orleans without her, as a matter of fact. i do believe we are definitely confirmed. i think what she is interested to know are your recommendations for the saturday? night dinner specifically & whether there is still room in your party for clancy's. i understand the confusion since she doesn't post much, but look at the avatars !

Here are my comments on local restaurants:

First of all, both Gabrielle and Clancy's are very good restaurants offering great Louisiana food. Everyone should enjoy these meals.

Commander's Palace - stuffy and somewhat overpriced but with generally good food especially the turtle soup. I wouldn't characterize it as a must. Great wine list.

Other restaurants to try if you can't get into Clancy's on Saturday:
Dick & Jenny's - Creole/Louisiana/Southern food in a small, simple setting, but no reservations accepted. OK wine list.
Cuvee - Louisiana/continental food in a very nice, upscale setting. Good wine list.
Bayona/Herbstaint - two Susan Spicer restaurants offering Louisiana food w/ eclectic influences. Bayona is the more elegant of the two and has a larger wine list.
Rene Bistro - French (the chef is from Alsace IIRC) cuisine at very good prices in a modern setting. Decent wine list.
Galatoire's - Classic New Orleans cuisine in a 100 year old setting. The experience is a throw-back in time. Coat required.
Jacques-Imo's - Louisiana, Southern food at very reasonable prices in one of the funkiest settings you'll ever see. Mediocre wine list.

I will second the not-nescessary-to-go on Commander's Palace. Yes, it used to be as good as it gets but not today.

I wouldn't miss Galatoire's!

Gus,
Duh! My apologies to Katy.
We have made no formal plans for Clancy's yet. Suggest you and Katy join us though. The food is divine and it's a fun joint. But it's up to you guys.
That said, Wineaux posted a nice list.

I will make a list for Clancy's as the event draws nearer and take care of reservations. Will do this after firming up the group following May 4. The restaurant will cooperate with us. And I'm thinking we all should go at approximately the same time and then cab caravan to Rock 'N Bowl afterward.

Line-up change:
Stemor, unfortunately, will not be with us. But the group number remains the same because DSTwins added one.
Still at 56 and counting.

Gus,
You can't go wrong either way. Galatoire's corkage is $15. Clancy's likely with be $0.

Wineaux- Thanx for the comments. Your suggestions will be helpful. I can't wait to get to New Orleans, truely a wish come true.

Davidn- I am definately going to push for Galatoire's based on your recommendation.

Fortunately, we have three meals a day and sometimes I can even fit in an extra one to enjoy some gulf oysters or a local treat. Louisiana is one of seven of the United States that I have not been to and at the top of my list to get to so HERE I COME! The party atmosphere would have better suited me a couple of years ago though, so I may have to pace myself. Since the baby, I am a pathetic lightweight (quite a different story from my bartending days & nights.)

I am finally goping to get Mrs. TJ out of the country (Canada didn't count, and neither did Hawaii) -- to Italy! But we are fairly well-travelled in the States, but not 43 of them. I'd have to count, but maybe 30-35....

TJ,

I've visited and enjoyed something about each of the "Lower 48", and can tell you that Southern Louisiana is one of my favorite areas due to its uniqueness. Although I DO have to admit that JULY in South LA might be just a tad *too* unique for some.
Cheers, y'all
