That is highly logical.

OK, there is just something wrong with that picture! Highly illogical.

Well, in the interest of a clean Forum, we refrained from adding your former "mesh avatar" to the picture.

This month's theme was "Eurail Pass through Europe's Wine Regions". Any bottle was fair game as long as you could get to that region using your imaginary Eurail pass.

Here are my tasting notes from the dinner. I'll post these to the appropriate forum next. This is for the people that like to read their way through an entire lineup.

NV Renard Barnier Brut Champagne Cuvee Especiale (WIML88,NOWA,NOWS)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by Bella Donna. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Slightly yeasty nose of mushrooms and citrus fruits. Fairly straightforward lemon zest flavor on the palate. Nice, simple and pleasurable house Champagne. Drink now. Recommended QPR.

2004 Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina Sannio (WIML87,NOWA,NOWS)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by us. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of pineapple, guava and passion fruit. Flavors of lemon dominate with a little pineapple hiding in there on the finish. Based on the performance of the 2003 Avellino I’m guessing this wine might put on a little weight with one year in the bottle. Drink now or hold for 6 months to a year. Recommended QPR.

2003 Feudi di San Gregorio Fiano di Avellino (WIML89,NOWA,WS88)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by bigred_seeker. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of pear and citrus fruits. Flavors of yellow apple, pear and some light citrus notes. Drink now. Recommended QPR.

2000 Olivier Leflaive Freres Puligny Montrachet les Champs Gains (WIML90,NOWS, WA89-91)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by MikeB. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of mineral, toast, light butter and apples. Flavors of pear, wet stone and crème fraiche. Can be drank now but should hold 3-4 years I’m thinking. Recommended, pricing being critical.

1994 DAO Cardeal Reserva Caves Dom Teodósio (WIML82,NOWA,NOWS)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by TexasZin. Made from Touriga (35%), Tinta Pinheira (35%), and Bastardo (30%). Light dusty rose color in the glass, fairly clear hue throughout and remarkably no bricking was evident. Earthy nose of mushrooms, rust and blood. Light cherry flavor on the palate with a short finish. Interesting science experiment but not my cup of tea. Drink now. Pass in my book.

2000 Ramos-Pinto Douro Duas Quintas Reserva (WIML90,NOWA,WS92)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by TimH. Light purple to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black cherries, saddle, pepper and an odd component I couldn’t quite place. Flavors of cherry, cassis and plum. Drink now to over the next 2-3 years. Recommended.

2000 Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva (WIML85,WA86,WS87)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I apologize but I can’t remember who brought this wine. Dusty rose to garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Heavy nose of barnyard here makes it difficult to discern any other aromas. Singular palate based on Bing cherries. I’d drink now but maybe with a little luck it’ll improve slightly with a little time in bottle. Pass is my recommendation.

1995 Agostina Pieri Brunello di Montalcino (WIML89,NOWA,WS90)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I apologize but I can’t remember who brought this wine. Ruby to garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of candied cherries, orange peel, sandlewood and a little potpourri. Flavors of cherry over an earthy frame. Tannins still pretty firm with a medium body. Drink with a little decanting or hold for another year and recheck then. I’m passing myself, personal preference.

1998 Podere Poggio Scalette Alta Valle della Greve Il Carbonaione (WIML91,WA91,WS91)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by us. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. The nose had an odd funk to it when first poured that eventually blew off within 15 minutes or so. Just like the last time I had this wine I got some aromas of dark fruits, cassis and black licorice. Flavors have morphed a little to show red cherries with just a whisper of mocha. Drink now. Recommended.

1999 Nino Negri Valtellina Sfursat 5 Stelle (WIML92,NOWA,WS91)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I do not know who brought this wine but I liked it! Color appeared to be rose, maybe a little darker, with some very slight bricking at the edges. The nose at first reminded be of barbeque just like when you’re standing in front of the grill with a cold one in your hand. Also picked up some notes of crushed black cherries along with other dark fruits. Flavors of dark cherries, plum and an almost sweet like presence on the palate. Drink now. Recommended.

1995 Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan (WIML89,WA90,WS90)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I believe this wine was brought by bigred_seeker. Color was garnet to dark garnet with just a little bit of bricking at the edges. Nose of bell pepper at first pour later gave way to fresh roasted coffee as the wine was allowed to sit in the glass. Flavors of green beans at first that once again as it sat in the glass finally gave way to some currants and other rich fruits. Recommend this bottle be held for a couple more years before retasting. If drinking now then be sure and decant 30 minutes to an hour to allow it to open up. Recommended.

1996 Château La Conseillante Pomerol (WIML88,WA88,WS87)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I believe this wine was brought by Bella Donna. Dark ruby to garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty looking hue. On the nose I got a little brettiness at first that eventually blew off to show some black berries and mocha. Flavors were sweet red cherries, mocha and a slightly out of place mint component. Can be drank now with a little decanting but probably should be held another year or two if you only have a few bottles. Unless you pick this up at a really attractive price I’d pass myself.

1998 Château Bourgneuf Pomerol (WIML88,WA89,WS87)

I believe the WA rating above is the same wine.

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I believe this wine was brought by MikeB. Dark garnet color in the clear, especially clear looking throughout. Nose of briar patch, cedar, pepper and a medley of dark fruits. Flavors of dark berries, black cherries, graphite, a little meatiness and just a little bit of eucalyptus on the finish. Unless you have a ton of these to burn I’d recommend on holding this another 5 years before trying a bottle. Only recommended at an attractive price point.

2000 Damilano Barolo Liste (WIML91,WA92,WS93)

Alright, no smartaleck comments about babykilling. I didn’t bring it!

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. I’m not sure who brought this bottle but I’m glad you did! Dark ruby color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose that gave away some spice, thistle and rose petals. Flavors of red, juicy berries, a pleasnant layer of “bitters’ with just a small note of chocolate. I wouldn’t touch this wine for another five years at the minimum. Recommended.

2002 Elio Peronne Sourgal (WIML89,NOWA,NOWS)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by preferred. Straw color in the glass, moderately opaque throughout. Nose of passion fruit, guave and pineapple. Flavors of passion fruit, lychee and a little pineapple. Does anybody know how long these these will drink? I would of thought the 2002 would be a goner by now but it’s still drinking remarkably well. Drink now. Recommend QPR.
