Well, the Denver tasting group got together again last night. Despite the notable absence of Stemor, a great time was had by all.

The theme this time was the noble grape of Burgundy from all regions. We tried to, and did, achieve a diverse assembly of wines. Members of this board in attendence were myself (and mrs. mbansek), FreeTheGrapes and Mrs. FTG, davidandrose (both David and Rose), and TheTWood and TheMrs.Wood. From the other board were Sideshow and Mrs. Sideshow, and our newest attendee, BenTheWeinberg.

It was a night of surprises in many ways. Wines were not declared, with the exception of TheTWood, our host, who mediated regional declarations to avoid overlap. Points were assigned by the 10 tasters, with five points for first place, three for second place, and one point for third place. Identities of the wines were not revealed until all points were recorded and tallied.

Wines were open and/or decanted for various lengths of time, which will be noted on the individual tasting notes in their proper sections.

Individual notes are posted in the appropriate sections, with links below. The wines, in reverse order:

9) Receiving 0 votes overall, the only wine to be shut out, was the 2000 Ramsey Lot#15 California PN. This wine was clearly outclassed in this event.
7 tie) The first big surprise of the night, the 1999 Martinelli RRV Reserve, which only received one vote. While nobody noticed any cooked or corked notes, this wine did not show well. Being one of the last wines tasted, this wine had been decanted for almost five hours. Based on my prior tastings of this wine, its drinking window was clearly missed.
7 tie) Also receiving one vote was the 1998 Felton Road Central Otago PN from New Zealand.
6) 1998 Geantet-Pansiot Gevrey-Chambertin Le Poissenot. Five points. This was opened, but not decanted, for 2-1/2 hours before the event, and poured back in the bottle for travel. Decanted for approximately 1-1/4 hours at the event. In total, it had been opened for 3-3/4 hours before being tasted.
5) 2000 Sebastiani Sonoma Coast PN. Seven points.
4) 1999 St. Innocent Shea Vineyard PN from Oregon. Eight points. I also brought this wine, which was decanted approximately two hours and fifteen minutes before its turn in the lineup.
3) The second big surprise. This was brought as a ringer by FreeTheGrapes, the 2000 Nandroya PN from Tasmania! This wine received ten points.
2) 2000 Davis Bynum Allen RRV PN received 21 points!

And the clear winner, in a landslide:

1) 2000 Kistler Sonoma Coast, with 37 points. Also brought by FreeTheGrapes, he opened this wine (not sure whether decanted or opened) over nine and a half hours before it was tasted.

Prior to the actual tasting, we enjoyed a 1990 Dom Perignon, and the January TAA wine, the 2000 King Estate Reserve Pinot Gris. Both were served with various appetizers provided by the attendees and, in particular, some spectacular appetizers prepared by TheTWood and TheMrs.Wood.

After the tasting, we enjoyed a 2001 Babcock Gewurztraminer Cuvee Sublime, provided by Sideshow and Mrs. Sideshow.

Overall, a great time was had by all. A special thanks to our gracious hosts, TheTWood and TheMrs.Wood. And yes, once again I went home with blood on my shirt from wrestling with their beast, Porter. I swear, Porter was consistently the instigator, I was just a helpless victim!

Mike

Interesting notes. Sounds like a great tasting. I'm also suprised that the Martinelli was at the bottom of the scoring. It is spectacular wine every time I've tasted it.

Mike,

You guys know how to have a tasting. I really regret missing this one, as I was going to bring a '00 Kistler Sonoma Coast ... it's good to know that it would have gone over well, anyway.

Cheers, y'all

Mike - Great notes, and thanks again to Mr and Mrs ThetWood for hosting such a wonderful event. Nice cellar in the works at the wood residence as well....

As for the Beast Porter instigating a conflagration with our honorable poster - mbasnsek - I must beg to differ. The wine certainly got the better of one of us by the time Porter was let in the house, but I don't think it was me....although Rose said I snored all the way home!!

David,

Sounds like an awesome evening, as expected. I did have a question though: while you were snoring ... were you in the driver's seat?

Cheers, y'all

You know, I remember mbansek wrestling on the floor with the dog, but didn't remember him needing band-aids until I saw the open box on the counter yesterday. Any injuries were fully provoked. I take no responsibility when you decide to get down to Porter's level (thought that's not hard to do with a dog that size).
