We had a random Sancerre that I didn't bother taking notes on. Saintsbury Pinot Noir Carneros '00 ($40): Woody, smoky nose. Immense black cherry, rushing into the long, peppery finish. Outstanding effort. Wine of the Night for half the crowd (mostly the non-winos). Domaine du Vieux Lazaret (Chateauneuf-du-Pape) '01 ($32): Aggressive nose. Candied fruit, very spicy on the palate. A little hot, rough on the throat. Too much for most food. Ch. De la Coste (Margaux) '00 ($27): WotN for everyone else. Smooth fruit and earth on the nose, well-balanced flavors of the same, onto the silky finish. Very elegant at rock-bottom price. Ch. LaGrange Clinet '01 ($??--Gary, any ideas?): Still tight after being opened for 2.5 hours (I found out later they didn't decant like I asked, just opened the bottle). More big black cherry, but the teeth-gripping tannins made it unenjoyable. Has a good deal of promise. Try again after 2005 or so. All in all, a nice experience, and an education for some non-winos. The food at 99 Main was very good, as usual. The service was discreet and professional. Only complaint was them not decanting when I asked. We'll organize another of these very soon.

Nice notes, Sheldon. I'm in full agreement. That Margaux was surprisingly lovely. I didn't see the check, but Christine had told us she would charge $20 for the Clinet. All the wines were VERY reasonably priced by restaurant standards. Thanks for setting this up. Kathy and I had a fine time, and look forward to our next outing.
