RF,

This thread lasts as long as a bottle of '00 Numanthia in a vac-u-vinned bottle!

Cheers, y'all

What scares me is that I have had the '00 Numanthia twice & been totally underwhelmed both times. It speaks of nothing from Spain to me. Could be from anywhere & in more recent vintages is vastly overpriced.

rf,

i agree with you on the didn't remind me of spain thing. i did however think it was easily a great bottle of wine. i bought all my numanthias (00 & 01) for $35.

ant -

I'm with you - I think it's a great bottle of wine. Probably my 2nd or 3rd WOW wine, when I first tasted the '98. Regretably I don't have any of the '98, however.

I loved this the first time I had it, but have been too impatient in trying it again recently. I need to smack myself around whenever I even start to THINK about popping one of these again.

We had it about a year ago as part of a big NJ tasting. It was great. I cannot exactly remember, but around a 92-93 pointer & drink or hold.

Just had the '99 last Friday as part of an all Spanish wine extravaganza I put on at our house (other wines included a 96 Vino Lancia Reserva (Rioja), 99 Leda (Ribera? not sure...), 99 Clos Martinet (Piroat), and a 99 Vlal Lach (Piroat)...

Little or no decanting (open bottles for a bit...) and no formal tasting - more like food, drink and robust conversation, but anyway...

What can I say - dense & chunky with nice fruit, some slight tar and leather notes...tannins were a bit overwhelming at first. We opened the Numanthia #2 after the Vino Lancia (the latter alwasy a great drink...and I was happy was not yet past its prime) and it was certainly a much denser and substansial wine - though unlike the Lancia - which was ready to drink upon bottle opening the Numanthia needed a bit more time to open - and even then had a real tannic edge - still it was very drinkable and enjoyable...more so then the Leda - which just was not ready IMO (but much better then when I opened one last year)...but it was less complex (more one dimensional) then the Vlall Lach - though both were equally chunky (and enjoyable), with a bit more body then the Martinet and IMO they still could have used more time to show properly. I also have a few 2000s that I imagine I'll hold onto a bit...

My apologies if my notes come accross as relatively simple - but we were not formally tasting and I really don't write great notes anyway....hope this helps regardless..and BTW - I am glad to be finally posting on this forum after lurkign on and off since pretty much its inception (and yes I know many hear from Spectator...who can guess who I was over there? 2 hints: haven't posted in probably at least 1 year and I am the originator of the term DRAB, or to DRAB - which I'm glad to see is still in use!)

Oh and BTW - I find the Termes wines to always be great regular drinkers with tons of wonderful up front cranberry like fruit...a real wine bargain IMO...and the Numanthia Toro's are certainly not at all bad in the $35 range - not at all...

I've still got a 6-pack of the '00 and I think I got a magnum of the '01 from j_b. Based on what I've read, I'm with you, ant, and am not buying the '02.

FYI - had one of my remaining 6 bottles last Friday. Was drinking very nicely, but I'm thinking another two years and this sucker will really be humming on all cylinders. It's just all so slowly coming together into a complete winner of a wine.

If you drink wine, you get smarter....

I had this about 8 months ago and I thought it was shut down pretty hard. I only have three left and I'm not even thinking about opening another for 2 years.

Reductive nose of blackberry, cassis, smoke and minerals. Palate is dominated by smoke and dark fruits. Well balanced with gripping tannins. Needs more time.*

The bottle we drank at this dinner was mine. It had a real reductive nose and taste to it which made it stand out rom the other vintages. Very different from my last bottle about 1.5 years ago. With 6 it probably won't hurt to open one in about 1.5-2yrs. I am unfortuantely down to 3 from 6, so I will probably wait 2-3 years.
