The '98 from passive storage (not mine) about two weeks ago was showing lots more complexity than the last tinme I tasted it. There was some tobacco/earthy/leather to the nose, and the palate was very smooth (but still substatial). Looks like unless you have very cool storage that this wine is ready to go.

RF: I agree completely, and mine are in passive storage. This is a buy for me, even at $50+.

we stood up a 3-liter of this wine for my brother's birthday dinner tomorrow. i'll post my thought in a day or 3.

I'd really be curious to read your impressions. I've had this wine twice before and it's been hard as nails both times and in a blind tasting of comparable Riojas it finished last both times. I still have a bottle left but am afraid it will dissapoint once again. I'm hoping for the best!
