$48; No pro ratings yet; 92 Winetex

Decanted 30 minutes prior to dinner; A very dark Syrah-like purple.

Just after the decant this wine had a spicy nose of dark fruit, primarily blackberry, anise and a bit of oak. As with the previous versions it was very fruity and juicy in the middle with a well-defined structure. It is very similar to the 2000 in its flavor profile but potentially lacking in the velvety texture that the 2000 has. This should come with more bottle age as this wine is still an infant.

There are monster tannins in this wine that come across super dry on the finish. In fact a big swish in the mouth now gets you “tannic wine face” (reference to a beer commercial of “bitter beer face”). It stained our tongues and teeth purple but we liked every minute of it. It was a very good wine and probably worth the increase in price. Time will tell.

Don’t kill these too young. I am not planning to open another one of these for at least two years.

14.5% alcohol (probably conservative)

I saved some for tomorrow to check its progress. There's nothing like wine in the morning.

The only way I won't kill one of these too young is if you don't ship them to me. Just call me baby killer.

The good news is that 13+ hours the wine is still really good. The tannins have subsided a bit and I can make out a few more flavors that were masked last night. In addition to blackberry there is some raspberry along with a slight herbal component.

Wine, it's what's for breakfast.

i just tasted the 01 numanthia over two days. i concur with most of winetex's analysis. the 01 is slightly more approachable than the 00 and not quite as massive. at this stage on day one it showed slightly better than the 00. long term i believe the 00 is a better wine. me93

Ojeffso - I agree with you that ultimately the '00 will be the better wine. The '00 seemed more balanced on release and through the last bottle I tried. I'm not purchasing any more of the '01 since I bought so much '00.

Dark fruit, blackberry, bacon fat, minerals and blackberry jam. Loads more jam and minerals on the palate. Great intensity of fruit, tannins and acid with a great finish. Nice wine. Young.*

A.I.,

Personally for my own stash I will wait at least 3-5 years before I pop one. There is a lot there but it needs to integrate a lot more. I think it will be really great once it does.

Wow, the last note on this is 05. And, perhaps that's right. This wine is not ready to go.

At the time when Winetex posted, no ratings, but: RP 95+ / ST 94. Winetex paid $48, I see. I paid $38. :-)

I had the 00 last week & with 40 mins of air time, it was singing! Not the 01 though, the last few sips were best. This took a long time to "open up". There is no rush on this bottle, I won't open another for another 1-2 @ the least. I am not sure I see the ratings listed, but as most Num Toros, a great bottle of wine!

Tonight a 91+ & a big hold.

It was so tannic I've never opened another one. I'm going to open a 2000 pretty soon.

LCC - So what about our 01 Termanthias? 2011? I'm curious on those as well.

It was very tannic. With the last glass it was starting to come around. But, most of it was pretty much gone. I won't touch for a couple more years.

Boy, I have not had a Termanthia in a long time. Who will volunteer for a test drive? :-)
