So, we went to a tasting at a local store and for once I did not make JC take the notes, I did it. Here they are in order of tasting:

2004 Pazo de Monterrey Blanco Monterrei:
65% Treixadura, 35% Godello, $11.45
Apparently this is the only wine From Monterrey to be found here... mineraly, citrus, tart flavors - overall very refreshing. The finish improved significantly with some goat cheese. 87 points.

2005 Bodegas Sameiras Blanco, Ribiero:
Blend of Treixadura, Albarino, Godello. Lado and Louriero, $15.84
More mineral flavors than the last wine, grapefruit on the palalte, viscous mouthfeel. Very good. 89 points.

2003 Bodegas Castano Hecula, Yecula
100% Old Vine Monastrell, $10.20
Started with oaky/woodsy flavors, not in a good way, with dried cherry and black fruit. Weak, thin finish. 87 points.

2003 "La Universal" Venus, Monstant
50% Old Carignan (Slate), 50% Syrah (Granite), $18.48
Barnyard nose - very reminiscent of a Rhone - cherry liquer - I foudn this wine to be a little out of balance. The guy pouring described it as soft and plush - I disagree entirely with that.

2004 Alto Landon, Manchuela
Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Grenache, $27.41
Red fruit on the nose. Cab gives it a somewhat off-putting green/bitter taste on the midpalate, flat finish.

2004 Cellar Cantonella Cervoles, Costers del Segre
45% Tempranillo, 23%Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 12% Garnacha, $25
Full bodied, yet soft. Red fruit is evident. WEll balanced.

2001 Tilenus "Pagos de Posada", Bierzo
100% Old Vine Mencia, $32.30
Nose of blueberry & blackberry, easrthiness and red fruit on the palate, very smooth, medium-long finish. Entirely enjoyable. Drink now or over the next year or two. 92 points.

2003 Villacreces, Ribera del Duoro
75% Tinto Fino, 25% blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, $29.75
fruit is dominant. Very soft, feminine, well balanced with a long finish. 91 points.

2003 Closa Batllet, Priorat
100% Carignan, $34
With our upcoming trip to Spain and the Priorat, the last two wines were of the most interest... Black fruit on the nose, bright cherry liquer on the palate. Very well balanced. Could use a couple of years in the bottle. Drink starting 2009 in my opinion. 92 points now with potential to gain a couple more.

2003 Roquers de Porrera, Priorat
40% Grenache, 40% Carignan, balance is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot & Syrah, $38.25
Drinking well now, the grenache clearly lends approachability to the wine. Can taste terrior - fruit is present, and wine is well balanced. Drink now or over the next several years. 92 points.

I enjoyed the Venus and the Villacreces more than MLV, otherwise we agreed on all of the wines.

Thanks for the notes on the Villacreces - I went through a lot of the 1996, but haven't seen much of that wine in our market since then. What a deal it was for around $12 on closeout...

That is a steal - I thought the 03 to be a very nice wine -

I know - I think the 2004 is going around $40, as it received 95 pts from the Wine Advocate. When I saw that Jay Miller gave this wine a 20 year drinking window, I raised an eyebrow with skepticism. Granted it may be a large scaled, tannic wine (and I haven't tasted this wine in a few vintages), but 20 years?

I think "hardly".
