70% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet. A disappointment, and a disturbing initial confirmation of everything I feared about Jay Miller's tasting abilities and preferences (he gave this 97 pts). Massive fruit smothered with equally massive vanilla oakiness on both the nose and palate. No hard edges, polished and smooth but also monolithic, one-dimensional and not terribly interesting. No subtlety or nuance and very little complexity. Pleasurable enough for some folks I suppose, but clearly not remotely a 97 point wine. Smoother and more polished than the '03 Clio but less interesting and complex. The '03 was far more distinctive if a bit overoaked (though less than the '04) and rough around the edges.

89-90 points for me. If I had been served this blind, my initial guess would have been Shirvington or Henry's Drive Reserve from the Sparky era...

i liked the 2004 better than the 2003 which i found undrinkable. the 2004 was at least balanced and enjoyable if a bit over oaked. it was a very good wine for the style.

I (obviously) wasn't crazy about either vintage, though I found them both drinkable (the kind of wines I'd be thrilled to drink if I'd gone to someone else's house for dinner with low expectations about what wine they'd serve...). The '04 is definitely much smoother, but to me in a very uninteresting way -- a big gob of fruit slathered in massive oak. The '03 is slightly less oaky, not as smooth and is a bit disjointed, but it's a little more interesting and less monolithic. For me the '04 is very Aussie-like -- tastes like one of Sparky's wines from 2-4 years ago (shirvington, HDR), or some Mitolo and Two Hands wines I've had. All very drinkable stuff, just not that interesting to me.
