Rioja Calvario 2000 14% 90% Tempranillo planted in 1945 Around $55

You should have been there to see my smile when I saw that bottle on the table. This time (same venue as my first Calvario experience, 4 months later) we had better glasses, though still not on par with such a beautiful wine. Impressive purity (and depth) of fruit, with floral notes but also fine smokiness and with time (and a lot of warming of the glass in my hands) hints of cocoa and vanilla. Delicate mineral notes also emerged. No need to say, this wine put me one glass behind the other tasters for the rest of the evening. Even better than the first time. I felt like hiring a plane and spelling T-H-A-N-K-S in the sky for this. 93

2000 Finca Allende Rioja Calvario

Tasted at an offline so brief comments only

Yowza baby. Me likey. Dark purple color. Attractive nose of blueberries, pepper and earth. Flavors of red licorice, sweet cherries and currants. This wine is drinking really well right now and was probably showing the best tonight. Drink now through let’s say 2012. Gotta buy some more to beef up my Spanish section of the cellar.

NOTE: I don't normally post numerical ratings but I thought it would be interesting to Gastro that I personally rated this 94 pts. A solid wine Gastro and I intend to buy more.

2000 Finca Allende Rioja Calvario - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (11/19/2007)
WIML90,PURPLE89

Tasted November 19, 2007. Opened and served immediately. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of Kirsch, charcoal, a hint of leather and rose petals. Flavors of black cherries, black berries and lavender. Bright acidity, firm tannins, full body. Drink now with a minimum of an hour in the decanter or continue to hold. Be sure and decant for sediment either way, throwing a fair amount. 14% alcohol. (90 pts.)
