| Decanted 3 1/2 hours and consumed while watching Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest...
Reticent nose of blackberry, blueberry, cassis and tar.
Similar flavors on the palate. Seriously heavy on the blueberry. It kinda reminds me of the blueberry syrup included with blueberry muffin mix. Mouth-coating fine, dusting tannins and a surprisingly long finish. This is a very good wine now, but not spectacular. Like with the '99 I had last week, the question is whether the tannins will give way before any fo the primary fruit does. I'm not certain I want to knw what this wine's secondary characteristics are. Mouthfeel is incredible, as is the length of the finish, so my score is higher than the simple attack would suggest. 92(+?) | | I can't listen to that much Wagner. | After checking-in on one of my '00's a few weeks ago, I'm convinced that all vintages of this wine are in need of many years of cellaring.
Only time will tell whether the fruit outlives the tannins, as you said. Oldest vintage is '98, so even that is relatively young right now.
I had an '03 in Sept and it struck me as the most open of the young Numanthia's I've tasted. Folks on eBob are saying the '04 is pretty tasty, too. | | | |

Decanted an unknown amount of time. Opulent purple color. A whiff of pencil lead on the nose followed by heady black fruits. Tight tannic grip grabs and releases in one motion. Very rich, very fruity and dark. Most likely suffered by drinking after the Aussie fruit bombs. Still, a wonderful wine, definitely currently in its prime. 94 pts. | | Visit The Butcher Block at http://www.butcherblocktampa.com/ |
