2003 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Calatayud Garnacha - Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (6/6/2006)
WIML85,WA88,NOWS

Tasted June 6, 2006 at home. Opened and served immediately double blind in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Slight metallic nose with some plums, black berries, dried herbs and a touch of pepper. Later one some leather notes. Flavors of what I’ll call “grapefruit” (yuck) with some Bing cherries and red berries. Thin and/or light acidity with soft tannins. Drink over the short term. Worst bottle I’ve had yet of this wine. Docking it another point from the previous tasting. Even at the average price of $7.85 I’ve paid for this wine based on this tasting the wine is bordering between unacceptable and acceptable. (85 pts.)

I had another bottle of this last night. It was almost identical to the last bottle on 6/6/06 I'm sorry to say.

2003 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Calatayud Garnacha - Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (7/2/2006)

Tasted July 2, 2006 at home. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Rot Wein glass. Light garnet to garnet color in the glass, fairly clear throughout. Nose of blackberries, plums, banana (wtf???) and cardamom. Otherwise, completely different than last time tasted. Flavors of blackberries, kirsch, toast, red cherries and a little Bing cherries. Light to medium acidity, light to medium tannins. Drink now. Based on the local retail price of $7.18 each I’d say the value here is still recommended. (87 pts.)
