Great bargain tasting ($30 for literally all you could drink + decent appetizers) at the Wine House in LA featuring Eric Solomon-imported Priorats. Many intersting and delicious wines, quite a few very reasonably priced, including:

'04 Mas Doix Salanques
'04 Mas Doix
'03 Clos Erasmus
'04 Clos Erasmus Laurel
'03 Vinya del Vuit, El "8"
'04 Nit de Nin
'03 Cellars Ripoll, Closa Batllet
'03 Terroir al Limit, Dits del Terra
'03 Terroir al Limit, l'Arbossar
'03 Celler de L'Encastell, Roquers de Porrer
'04 Celler de L'Encastell, Marge
'02 & '03 Celler del Pont, Lo Givot
'02 & '03 Mas Perinet, Tinto
'03 Mas d'En Compte, Tinto
'04 Mas d'En Compte, Blanco

While of course the high-end offering (e.g., '03 Clos Erasmus, '04 Mas Doix) were impressive (though nothing came close to the most impressive Spanish wine, albeit non-Priorat, I've tasted from the past few vintages, '01 Aalto PS -- what a mind-blowing wine that's going to be with a few more years of bottle age), the most interesting and enjoyable aspect of the tasting was sampling (...and re-sampling multiple times!) some of the less expensive offerings. Highlights included '03 Mas d'En Compte (70% Grenache, 20% Carinena, 10% syrah)($30) and '04 Clos Erasmus Laurel (50/50 Grenache/cabernet) (~$32). The Laurel especially I would highly recommend. Not the world's most complex wine, and it lacked the savory complexity of the Erasmus, but for the price point boy it was really great -- smooth, round, easy-drinking, no rough edges but a nice bite.

PS -- Different vintage, but any fan of Priorat or Spanish wines absolutely must try a bottle of the '01 Cellars Sans Ripoll Closa Batllet (RMP 96 pts). A delicious all-around wine with an unbelievable nose -- probably the most intense, complex, interesting, attractive wine aromatically I've ever encountered. After my gf and I sample this wine, we looked up Parker's notes. HIs comments: "Believe it or not, this wine smelled like a hypothetical blend of the famed Pomerol, Le Pin, and the two distinctive Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley, Colgin and Bryant." And he's not kidding -- it smells that amazing!!

Thanks for the great notes. I expect to visit some of these wineries this summer.

You should have an awesome time. Last night's tasting was extremely impressive. Many terrific wines, and the winemakers were a very engaging, interesting group of folks. I'm jealous!

I didn't realize the winemakers were there. I'm doubly envious.

It was the same "Priorat Posse" of Eric Solomon-imported winemakers that were featured last week at Hospice de Rhone: Sara Perez, Rene Barbier, Jr., Marc Ripoll, Daphne Glorian, Joan Sangenis, Montse Nadal, Eben Sadie, Raimon Castellvi and Esther Nin. Although it was too crowded/hectic to have in-depth discussions with the winemakers, I was still able to speak briefly with all of them -- a very intelligent, personable group. The wines were really eye-opening. The few whites that were poured were a mixed bag, but across-the-board the reds were good to great, including several extremely impressive $20-35 wines. Btw, the winemakers were uniformly ecstatic about the '04 vintage (even those pouring '03 and '02 and not '04), which seems as promising as '01.

You should have a great time in Spain this summer. I'd love to get over there myself in the next few years.
