| - 2001 Celler Del Pont Priorat Lo Givot - Spain, Catalunya, Priorat (4/23/2006)
WIML91-92,WA95,NOWS
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Dark and dusty red rose petal color in the glass. Almost “amarone” like nose of black licorice and pepper. Flavors of black cherries, white pepper, red berries and a dash of bitters. I’d wait another year before opening another bottle and decant an hour at that before tasting. This wine should last at least another 10 years in my opinion. I have no idea what pricing is on this bottle but based on the Wine Advovates estimate of $50.00 (never a really reliable source for pricing in my opinion) I’d say the value is acceptable. (91 pts.)

| | I have an offer from the owner of Celler del Pont to visit their winery this summer. I have a bottle of this wine, the 2003 I believe. How much time do you figure it will need? Splash decant? | | | |

| If you're talking about the 2003 I'd likely not even open it yet if it's remotely comparable to the 2001. Having said that...I'd definitely splash decant a youthful wine such as this and taste at 1 hour and go from there. I'm betting it'll be several hours before it perks up.
Bear in mind I'm in the camp of if you had to open it more than an hour early, it was too young to open it anyway. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |

| | Oh, I understand it's far too young. My quandary- in less than three months we will be in Priorat. It's either taste the 2003 from a winery I may visit or taste nothing. I'm opting for the former with reservations. Thanks for your advice. | | | |

Potential for a 93. More licorice on this wine but it had more of a red berry character than the other Spanish wines. There was a lot of complexity to this wine and it was better on day two. It also had a decent amount of acidity which might mean that more cellaring is in order. (92 pts.)
