| As reported in Oeno-File Volume 3, Issue 1, beginning with the 2001 vintage this new winery produced four exciting high altitude single vineyard wines, San Martin, Moncerbal, Las Lamas, and La Faraona. All of these wines were made from very old Mencia vines situated in the obscure Bierzo region in the north west of Spain. Mencia is an indigenous Spanish varietal that can present like Franc in some guises and appears Rhônish in other instances. Across the board, the 2001s were impressive wines.
In 2002, Palacios subdivided San Martin into two sections, San Martin and Fontelas, so now there are five individual offerings to accompany the base Villa de Corullon cuvée. In 2003, they introduced the value priced Petalos del Bierzo.
For most of Spain, the 2002 vintage was a difficult one. It was a cool growing season and many regions suffered rain at or near harvest. In Bierzo, the growers were spared any rain problems (the region experienced an average amount of precipitation) and while temperatures were relatively cool, Palacios harvested their vineyards just two weeks after they harvested their 2001s.
All wines from Palacios are bottled unfined and unfiltered. | | | |
