Dark ruby colour. Aromas of vanilla, sweet red plums, dried roses, currant, and dusty earth. Medium-full bodied, with plums, currant, vanilla, leather, and spice. Moderate length finish, 30-35s, with leather, orange rind, and a touch of alcohol. 89 points (10/19/2005).

You did not find it too oaky? I bought a few bottles last fall, opened one and found it horribly oaky and traded the rest. Perhaps the oak is calming down?

2001 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja) Tasted as part of Wino Depot's Tasting With Friends. Ruby in the glass, nice aromatic nose with red fruits, some plum as well and some wood and earthiness. Began quite nice on the palate but somewhat out of balance with the oak, tannina and fruit. Hints of tobacco emerged on the palate. There was a distinct stwed fruit note on the finish which was not my thing. 87-88 points, but disappointing as I have enjoyed this bottling much more previously.

The one time I had this wine it was reductive and unbalanced (high acidity).
