i bought 12 of these last week @ $9.99 per, and i am certainly NOT let down by this purchase. i've had 3 of them so far, and all 3 have been just incredible considering their price point. big & fruity enough to satisfy the bigger "style" that i prefer, but not extracted and syrupy like some zins and shiraz' i like get.

highly recommended as an everyday kind of sipper and then some.

Thanks for the note, Tbird. I'm going to be snagging a few of these for weeknight quaffers.

TBird- I agree with your notes on this wine. I've tried 2 bttls and had a very pleasant impression, esp. given the price point. I'm going to see if I can pick up a few more this weekend.

Yes, I agree and have some as well. Great QPR inho.

It is nice to know that there can be wine this good for under $10. Certainly one fine cellar defender for sure.

2003 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Calatayud Garnacha Viñas Viejas (Spain, Aragón, Calatayud) 11/21/2005 6831
Having gone through about half the case I purchased, there is some bottle variation with this wine, but overall all bottles have been very tasty.
The wine tonight showed very balanced, generous flavors of black cherry, pepper, mineral and little bit of chalk. Finishes nicely. I like it. 88 pts

Finished the last bottle of my half case purchase tonight. This bottle doesn't show as well as others (85 pts), but still I say this is a very nice value. I'll give them a try again with future vintages for sure if the price stays reasonable.

The wine was tasted 1 1/4 hours after splash decanting. It had a powerful nose of cherries and spice with oodles of black cherry and baking spice flavors that were well-balanced by the moderate tannins and plentiful acidity. Ready now. Somewhat Pinot Noir-like. Delicious. Me 92. My wife 91.

I paid $8 for it. (Yes, the Viñas Viejas)

  • 2003 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud Viñas Viejas - Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (7/12/2008)
Popped and poured. Medium garnet hue. Raspberries, assorted dried fruits, mushrooms, earth, and spice on the nose. Medium body. Initially this wine seemed to have a hint of amarone type dried fruit, most likely a result of the hot 2003 vintage. However, ripe raspberry fruit so typical of Spanish grenache eventually pushes forward. There's also a nice, almost savory earthy complexity to this one. Tannins are certainly noticeable but in balance. A good garnacha for summer sipping out on the patio. (88 pts.)
