| Priorat CIMS DE PORRERA 1997 14% Alc. (Cariñena mostly, with some Garnacha) What an unexpected find here! Offered this week BTG in the Tasca at $8. This was only their second vintage. I somewhat infanticided a bottle of this in late 2000 and last Friday I had the opportunity to see how it has developed. The cariñena character rules: the nose is driven by spicy, balsamic and mineral aromas; the mouthfeel is pleasantly polished, warm and round. Soft but barely sufficient acidity holds it nicely focused. 88-89
This was all consumed with some amazing cheeses: cured goat cheese from the south of Tenerife and Queso Zamorano Vicente Pastor (sheep, of course, and the natural partner/neighbor for Toro wines), and a little Jamón Serrano that I guiltily confess I'm beginning to like... | | | |

| Well, $8 BTG (1/6 of the bottle in a Spiegelau white wine stem) is exactly 1/6 of the price per bottle ($48), but as it goes they've just opened the Tasca, and there's a stock that they can't keep ageing without the price skyrocketing beyond realistic expectations (this is an island, and they know there's not such a huge market for $8 per-glass wines, and if there is, they want to know asap ). The average bottle markup at the Tasca (more a restaurant in fact) is a mere 5-15% ...no wonder I have this imbecile smile on my face all day long... | | | |

| | This is the "Classic"? It is probably going for around $50-60 around here. I too had the '98 and it was the least favorite '98 Priorat I've had (Gran Clos and Mogador were better). | | | |

| Yep, this is the Classic (in Spain this is Cims de Porrera by default; Solanes appeared later). I did like the 98 quite a bit, though I understand what the high % of cariñena did to you (my '98 Mogador is still horizontal, though not for long...) | | | |

| No Gastro, don't kill your '98 Mogador. It's got the stuff for improving in the next 5/10 years and remain on top of the hill for another 10 at least. I'd wait (you guessed right ). | | | |

| If I manage to get half a dozen of 2001 Germans I won't have room to cellar the Mogador for another Tenerife summer, so I foresee another Priorat TN before July. OTOH I may buy the 2000 and cellar it a while... | | | |

| It's time for a Eurocave . Why the 2000? I believe Elmundovino rated the 2000 lower than the 99, which was lower than the 98, perhaps it's worth waiting for the 2001, if Renè reverses the trend. In the meantime I'll sit on my case of 98 If you ever come to Italy, instead of going to the cuckoo clock land ... | | | |

| Eurocave or moving to Helsinki, either will do I'd have a hard time following just Elmundovino. I take a caveat for what it is, but wouldn't let them condition my appetites (a different tasting panel for each tasting? Come on!). I've read lots of good stuff on the 2000, but to be honest there are so many bottles in the 30-40 euro range that I'm awaiting for RP (for the rating to be sure, but especially for the window)...or the lotto...either will do
