Tasted as part of our April BAWE Spanish wine event:

Dense dark ruby in color, with a huge powerful nose of black fruits, black cherries, spice, and clove. Rich and coating on the palate, with fine balance and a long finish. 91 points, my #4 of the flight.

We had this @ one of our NJ dinners. If I remember correctly, the rating on this on that night were in the 91-93 range. So, very similar. Thanks.

This stuff is awesome!
  • 1999 Rene' Barbier Priorat Clos Mogador [Priorat, Catalunya, Spain] 94 pts. (3/24/2004)
Dinner at Harvest Vine with Justin. Holy Toledo! It is always amazing when you encounter something entirely new and unique to your palate. I have had very little Spanish wine, and this was a stunning introduction. From the moment we popped the cork this showed an impressive nose that kept moving in different directions all night, from coffee to cocoa to leather to even a somewhat savory, almost marine smell. On the palate this was explosive, leathery and acidic like a fine Sangiovese yet with much more body and structure. The wine started tight but over time showed more and more blackberry, mocha and chewy, chunky tannins. Man oh man, this is an awesome mouthful! Very old-world in character, somewhat rustic, yet awesomely deep and complex. Sigh, do I need to start collecting Spanish wines now too?

This was the first time I have ever had the wine and one of the first Priorat wines,s o I don't know the potential and what happens if you age these. But oh boy, it is giving a lot of love right now. It was tight but opened up beautifully. Mind you, tannins don't bug me too much.

I like to drink these wines young for that wonderful forward fruit. You can already tell a slight difference between the 99 and 00. The 01 should be even better, even if our friends at WS are making it impossible to find.

We recently had the 99 and agree w/ Bressler- the 99 had that raisiny and muted fruit which overtook the taste of the wine- good, but didn't care for is as much as when we had it a yr ago when the fruit was brighter.

Had this last night with friends.

No formal TNs as we were having too much fun. I really liked this wine, but it did not blow me away. This was fairly chewy and somewhat thick. I got some great blackberry with this and then some shale and other mineraliness along with the leather already mentioned. I wished I had brought a decanter and let this see some air to see what this might have been, but we sadly polished this off in less than an hour.

I'd rate it 90+ TJ points...maybe 91

How well does this wine, in general, age?

A Clos Mogador from a good vintage can go 10 years easy. I had the 1998 recently with whiner and it is still a 92-93 point wine for me on any given day.

Also keep in mind the 1999 was not as successful as a vintage than 1998 or 2000.

I completely agree with Jaimetown's assesment of the '98.

J'Town:

Didn't RP give the 1999 95 points or thereabouts?

Indeed he did. Here's his take...

The 1999 is more precise than the 2000, as well as perfumed. It is an opaque purple-colored, full-bodied, dense effort revealing notes of black fruits, liquid minerals, and flowers. There are layers and layers of richness, tremendous opulence, and impressive purity as well as persistence. Drink it over the next 15 years. This is a knock-out wine!

I was very excited to find several of the '99s a few months ago, then to see Eric's TNs on it on cellarTracker made me wish I had bought more.
I would probably spring for these in any decent vintage, but I'm hopeful to find the '01s.
This wine is really good value IMHO.

$45.00, Retail.

Decanted 45 mins, tasted over 2 hours.

I agree with every one above, a great bottle of wine. It seems that most are in the 91-93 range. Tonight, I will go with the 93 point rating. It was great tonight, singing (after some air time). Still, this has plenty of life in it. All around a great bottle of wine.

Rating: 93 points, drink or hold.

P.S.: Parker 95 points.
