At Vin, Vino, Wine in Palo Alto:

TASTING BAR SCHEDULE - JANUARY 2007
PROVENCE & LANGUEDOC REDS TUESDAY 1/2 & WEDNESDAY 1/3
Winter is a great time to enjoy the hearty, flavorful reds from the South of France, where many of the best wines, and most of the wines in this tasting, employ Syrah and/or Mourvedre. This flight starts with six moderately priced
bottlings ($18-$28), and ends with two of the region’s superstars.
2001 Côteaux du Languedoc “Amelius” (Chateau d’Exindre); 2000 Côteaux du Languedoc “Montpeyroux” (Domaine d’Aupilhac); 2003 Faugeres (Leon Barral); 2003 Bandol (Gros Noré); 2004 Patrimonio Rouge “E Croce” (Yves Leccia); 2000 Saint Chinian “Clos de la Simonette” (Mas Champart); 2001 Vin de Pays des Bouches du Rhône (Trevallon); 2003 Vin de Pays de L’Herault (Grange des Peres).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 ROULOT MEURSAULTS THURSDAY 1/4
The 2004 White Burgundies are brilliant. Here are our latest (and almost last) arrivals, from Jean-Marc Roulot in Meursault. These are classically structured, age-worthy and scarce.
2004 Bourgogne Blanc (Roulot); 2004 Meursault “Les Vireuils” (Roulot); 2004 Meursault “Les Meix Chavaux” (Roulot); 2004 Meursault “Les Tillets” (Roulot); 2004 Meursault “Les Luchets” (Roulot); 2004 Meursault “Les
Tessons” (Roulot).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- PIEDMONT REDS: 1999 FRIDAY 1/5 & SATURDAY 1/6
The great 1999s, now seven years old, are just starting to emerge from their shells. This survey starts with a
Barbera, a Nebbiolo, and a Barbera/Nebbiolo blend, then features two Barbarescos and three Barolos. We should
get a good insight into how this exceptional vintage is progressing.
1999 Barbera d’Alba “Affinato in Carati” (Paolo Scavino); 1999 Nebbiolo d’Alba “Valmaggiore” (Sandrone); 1999
Langhe “Corale” (Paolo Scavino); 1999 Barbaresco (Cigliuti); 1999 Barolo “La Villa” (Seghesio); 1999 Barbaresco
“Sori Paitin” (Pasquero); 1999 Barolo “Giachini” (Corino); 1999 Barolo “Carobric” (Paolo Scavino).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 WHITE BURGUNDIES: TUESDAY 1/9 & WEDNESDAY 1/10
CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET
The heart of this tasting compares 2004 Chassagne-Montrachet bottlings, one each from five top winemakers. The
flight starts with a beauty from neighboring Saint Aubin and finishes with a Grand Cru from the Chassagne side of
Batard-Montrachet.
2004 Saint Aubin “Les Murgers des Dents de Chien” (Girardin); 2004 Chassagne-Montrachet (Sauzet); 2004
Chassagne-Montrachet “Clos de la Truffière” (Girardin); 2004 Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Chaumées” (Bruno
Colin); 2004 Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Baudines” (Bernard Morey); 2004 Chassagne-Montrachet “Marquis de
Laguiche” (Drouhin); 2004 Batard-Montrachet (Bernard Morey).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 CÔTE DE NUITS GRAND CRUS THURSDAY 1/11
These wines will be painfully young, of course, but we are expecting a number of you will jump at the chance to
sample this array of Grand Crus, including Liger-Belair’s Richebourg and Comte de Vogüé’s two Musignys.
2004 Echezeaux (Vincent Girardin); 2004 Clos Vougeot (Michel Gros); 2004 Chambolle-Musigny “Premier Cru”
(Comte de Vogüé); 2004 Richebourg (Liger-Belair); 2004 Musigny “Vieilles Vignes” (Comte de Vogüé).

Here are some sensational new arrivals from Bandol’s Domaine Tempier, Gigondas’ Les Pallières and Vacqueyras’
Sang des Cailloux., each imported by Kermit Lynch and a long-time VVW favorite. To complete the theme,
we’ve added the two Châteauneuf-du-Papes from Vieux Télégraphe. Do not miss this glorious set of 2004s. See
page 2 for tasting notes and prices on the new arrivals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 RED BURGUNDIES: TUESDAY 1/16 & WEDNESDAY 1/17
LIGER-BELAIR & GIRARDIN I
At our 2004 preview tasting with Danny Haas last spring, Liger-Belair and Vincent Girardin were the two standouts.
Now that the wines have settled down from bottling and shiping, let’s see how they are doing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- HARTLEY-OSTINI’S HITCHING POST PINOT NOIRS THURSDAY 1/18
Gray Hartley and Frank Ostini have been making sensational Pinot Noirs from Santa Barbara and Santa Maria for
over twenty years, and the wines have been a fixture in our shop for a decade. Gray Hartley visited our tasting bar
six or seven years ago, and he has been eager to do an encore. Burt since Sideways hit, it’s been very hard to
maintain enough inventory to put on an interesting tasting. Finally, over the last six months, we’ve managed to
plead for allocations and hoard inventory enough to pull off a more than respectable tasting of seven gorgeous
Pinot Noirs. Gray is a font of information about his wines, and the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria wine scenes. He
will be here from 4 pm to 8 pm.
***** SPECIAL GUEST - GRAY HARTLEY *****
Special Hours Until 8 Pm Tonight
2005 Pinot Noir “Cork Dancer” (Hartley-Ostini); 2004 Pinot Noir “Santa Maria Valley” (Hartley-Ostini); 2004
Pinot Noir “Santa Rita’s Earth” (Hartley-Ostini); 2004 Pinot Noir “Bien Nacido” (Hartley-Ostini); 2004 Pinot

Included are seven Premier Cru Chassagnes, one Puligny, and one Grand Cru. See page 5 for tasting notes and
prices.
2005 Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Chenevottes” (Morey); 2005 Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Baudines” (Morey);
2005 Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Embrazées” (Morey); 2005 Chassagne-Montrachet “Morgeot” (Morey); 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALIFORNIA SYRAH TUESDAY 1/23 & WEDNESDAY 1/24
Expecting our share of cold and stormy weather this month and next, here is a selection of robust, flavor-packed
Syrahs to warm your insides. Included are excellent new arrivals from Rusack, Bucklin and Jellyroll, and superstar
bottlings from Ojai and Alban.

Austria’s most illustrious wine district. These are some of Austria’s finest Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings.
2004 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel “Stein am Rain” (Jamek); 2005 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel “Ried Achleiten”
(Jamek); 2004 Riesling Federspiel “Ried Pichl” (Jamek) 2005 Riesling Federspiel “Ried Klaus” (Jamek); 2004

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 RED BURGUNDIES: LIGER-BELAIR & GIRARDIN II FRIDAY 1/26 & SATURDAY 1/27
After the extreme richness of the 2003s, the more classic balance of Burgundy’s 2004 Pinot Noirs is quite
refreshing. Here are four wines each from two winemakers who made excellent 2004s, Thibault Liger-Belair and
Vincent Girardin.
2004 Bourgogne Rouge “Emotion de Terroirs” (Girardin); 2004 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge
(Liger-Belair); 2004 Santenay “Les Gravières” (Girardin); 2004 Nuits-Saint-Georges “La Charmotte” (Liger-

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CROZES-HERMITAGE & SAINT JOSEPH TUESDAY 1/30 & WEDNESDAY 1/31
Crozes-Hermitage and Saint Joseph are the two Syrah appellations in the northern Rhône where wines are still
reasonably priced. Here is a selection of five Crozes-Hermitages and three Saint Josephs that range in price from
$18 to $38. Delicious French Syrah at reasonable prices.
2005 Crozes-Hermitage (Laurent Combier); 2003 Crozes-Hermitage (Roland Betton); 2003 Crozes-Hermitage
(Rousset); 2003 Crozes-Hermitage “Les Picaudières (Rousset); 2003 Saint Joseph “La Madone” (Chante Perdrix);
2003 Saint Joseph “Offerus” (J.L. Chave); 1996 Saint Joseph “Offerus” (J.L. Chave); 2003 Crozes-Hermitage

Silver Mountain 2004 Pinot Noir Release Party
Friday, January 26, 2007, 6-9 p.m.

Greetings!
Please be our guest for the release of Silver Mountain's 2004 Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands: Tondre Vineyard!

Where & When

431 Kipling Street
Palo Alto, California 94301

The Wine: 100% Pinot Noir Alcohol: 13.5%
The Vineyard: Tondre Grapefield, Santa Lucia Highlands
Tasting Notes: This wine is a testament to the cool climate and terroir of the Santa Lucia Highlands, a prime growing region for Pinot Noir. Its spicy character, typical of this appellation, is coupled with an amazing depth of tart red cherry fruit. This wine was aged 16 months in tight-grained Hungarian oak, a barrel choice that complements rather than dominates the delicate Pinot Noir fruit and produces a smooth, silky mouthfeel. The palate is well structured, with rich, gorgeous colour and smooth tannins to ensure ageability. Nose: Complex, with red and black fruits, licorice and a hint of oak. Palate: Spicy, with an amazing depth of tart red cherry fruit, enhanced by some earthiness. Finishes clean and fresh. Balanced.
Winemaker's Notes:

Must analysis: Brix 25.8; PH 3.68; Acid 0.65
ML: 2mg/100ml
RS: 4mg/100ml
Not crushed, but destemmed; gravity fed through the entire process.
Fermentation: Whole berry; fermented in small containers; punchdown and drainover five times/day.
Barrels: 15 months; 70% in tight-grained Hungarian oak, 30% older French.
Bottling: Unfined and unfiltered.
Alcohol: 13.5%

Greetings:

All of us at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant are excited about getting our Wednesday evening tasting events at our Wine Bar under way again in the New Year. To celebrate our first tasting of 2007 we are pleased to be joined by Tony Bernardini, Rupert Billins & Kim Beto on Wednesday, January 31st, 4:30pm -7:30pm. These three wine industry luminaries will be presenting some of the top Italian wines from the Vias portfolio.

The cost of the flight will be $48 and will include the following wines:
2004 Pecchenino Dolcetto di Dogliani Siri d’Jermu, Piemonte,
Retail $27
2001 La Poderina Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany,
Retail $68
2001 Ceuso di Ceuso, Sicily,
Retail $38
2003 Colpetrone Sagrantino di Montefalco, Umbria,
Retail $68
**2000 Dal Forno Romano Amarone, Veneto, Italy,
Retail $497

(** Due to scarcity and high cost the Amarone will be a 1 ounce pour. All other wines will be a 2 ounce pour)

These stellar wines from some of bella Italia’s top producers represent a cross section of Italy’s diverse growing areas, and each wine in the flight is composed of a different grape variety or blend of varieties. While you relax and taste in our Wine Bar, our guest experts will drop by your table to answer your questions, and expound on the finer points of the selections we have assembled from one of the most complex and compelling wine countries on Earth.

We hope to see you all there!

Debbie, Peter, Bo and the entire FPWM team

BEST OF THE BEST: NAPA CAB TASTING

Back by popular demand, we are having our
IMPRESSIVE PREMIER NAPA CAB TASTING

Sunday, January 28,07 from 2 to 5pm $45 per person

VENGE 2003 FAMILY RESERVE OAKVILLE $89.99

The name Nils Venge is synonymous with greatness in Napa Valley. It was his 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon that received the first 100-point rating from Robert Parker for a California wine. He has been joined in the wine business by his son Kirk who is quickly developing his own reputation. They also produce Saddleback Cellars. Together they have revitalized the historic Rossini Ranch originally built at the end of the 19th century. The Venge label is used for their best wines.

Venge wines always carry a special intensity in the nose delivering violet, rich black currant, spice box with some cedary notes. On the palate the flavors of blackberry, currant, violet, anise and cedar lend themselves to a beautifully developed smooth wine. Drink: 2006-2011.

FLORA SPRINGS 2002 OUT OF SIGHT VINEYARD $56.99

90pts. WA (Parker) / WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

MERRYVALE 2003 PROFILE $84.99

93 pts WS/ WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

ROBERT MONDAVI 2003 NAPA VALLEY RESERVE $99.99

95 pts Connoisseur Guide 94 pts WA (Parker)/ WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

FREEMARK ABBEY 2001 BOSCHE NAPA VALLEY $54.99

96 Wine Enthusiasts/ WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

BERINGER 2002 NAPA VALLEY PRIVATE RESERVE $89.99

94 WA (Parker)/ WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

BERINGER 2001 HOWELL MOUNTAIN $64.99

BEAULIEU VINEYARD 2003 GEORGES DE LATOUR $69.99

WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

I don’t think there has ever been a vintage where Philip Togni has cheated anybody on flavor intensity or tannic structure as his wines always last, even in lighter vintages, for twenty or more years. The 2004 will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age, and should last for 25-30 years.

PHILIP TOGNI 2004 NAPA VALLEY $89.99

95 Parker/ WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

MEYER VINEYARD 2003 NAPA VALLEY $32.99

WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

CAIN VINEYARD 2003 CAIN FIVE NAPA VALLEY $94.99

The 2003 is a classic Cain Five, reminiscent of 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1996. Ripe and balanced, with floral notes, the wine is a bit tighter and slightly less evolved than the 2002—which suggests that our 2003 Cain Five will age extremely well. NOT YET RATED

STAGS LEAP WINE CELLARS 2003 S.L.V. $89.99

WS TOP 50 NAPA CAB

RUBICON ESTATE 2003 RUTHERFORD CASK CABERNET $62.99

95 Wine Enthusiasts

JORDAN 2002 ALEXANDER VALLEY $38.99

The continued addition of fruit from estate hillside vineyards and the blending of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with the Cabernet Sauvignon are responsible for the well integrated flavors, deep color and full mouth feel of the 2002 vintage.

And where is this event? Did I miss it somewhere in here?
I might be interested in going.

Sorry David. I cut and paste and did not read carefully. It's at the Wine Club Santa Clara.
