Ken Onish
Ken is a 38 year veteran of the fine wine industry having worked for the two of the most important wine personalities in the 20th century, Alexis Lichine & Frank Schoonmaker. He is currently a partner in Southern Starz, an importer of some of the best quality/value wines from the Southern Hemisphere.
He began his training in 1964 as an apprentice to Alexis Lichine at Chateau Lascombes in Margaux. In 1965, he joined the Lichine team in California and hit the street calling on the French restaurants in Southern California. From there he returned to his native New York where he met and worked for the next 11 years side by side with Frank Schoonmaker as his National Sales Manager and later his partner — traveling with Frank Schoonmaker twice a year to visit producers in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
In 1976 he merged the Frank Schoonmaker Selections into the Seagram Chateau & Estate Wines Co and became the executive vp of marketing and sales.
In 1981 he was selected by Edgar Bronfman Sr. to head up their Quality Control department overseeing the production and quality of wine in both the northern and southern hemisphere.
In 1983 he created and became President of Seagram’s American Classics Wine Co. Later that division was merged with the Seagram Classics Wine Company where he was evp of sales. From 1986-1988 he joined the Seagram National Account team as Vice President for Prestige Accounts with responsibility for Hotel Chains.
From 1989 through 1990 he joined Charmer Industries to develop and wine training program for distributor sales forces and their key accounts. A year later he found himself in the Soviet Union putting together one of the first Ukrainian/American joint ventures with Obolon Brewery in Kiev. He marketed brands of both beer, vodka and later wine in Soviet Georgia.
In 1992 he started Cape Ventures Co one of the first two importers to re-introduce South African wines to the U.S. and later folded that business into Southern Starz where he is president/ceo overseeing the selection and marketing of 40 wineries from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
