| Greetings:
Enjoy the hand-crafted wines of Erna Schein
Join us Wednesday, June 11th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward, owners of Erna Schein, to our Wine Bar.
Erna Schein is a boutique winery in the truest sense. Owned by Les
Behrens and Lisa Drinkward, who’ve made wine under the Behrens &
Hitchcock label since 1993, Erna Schein produces small lots of six or
seven wines a year at its winery perched high on top of Spring Mountain
in Napa Valley. Each wine is a low tech labor of love: crushed into
one-ton T-bins, punched down by hand, gently transferred to barrel, and
bottled unfined and unfiltered. One only has to look at Les and Lisa’s
hands during harvest to know their wines are truly “hand-crafted.” The
couple also gravitates toward small, interesting and low-yielding
vineyard sites, primarily in Napa Valley and Mendocino County,
working with growers who they know, like and trust, and who are as
obsessive about quality as they are. For Les and Lisa, it’s all about
letting the vineyards steal the show, and allowing the wines to speak
for themselves.
In 2005, with the announcement of Bob &
Lily Hitchock's retirement, Lisa and Les bought out their share of
their Spring Mountain winery, leading to the formation of Erna Schein
Handcrafted Wines. Although Bob and Lily are enjoying retirement, they
continue to operate B&H with Les & Lisa, making two wines each
year, which allows them to keep their teeth purple. The name Erna
Schein is a dedication to Les' mother, a woman who was near and dear to
all who knew her.
Come taste some massively flavored wines from
this talented couple and meet the folks behind the legendary Behrens
& Hitchcock and the soon to be legend Erna Schein. Having Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant to celebrate the evening will make it even more special.
| The
featured wines are served as two ounce glasses. If you find a favorite,
they are also offered as full glasses. The wines will be available for
retail sales as well while supplies last....

Neal Rosenthal Tasting and Book Signing
Reflections of a Wine Merchant
In the Redwood City Tasting Bar (3005 El Camino Real, Redwood City)
Friday June 13th 5:00 - 6:30pm
Please join us in welcoming Neal Rosenthal for a very special tasting and book signing in our Redwood City Tasting Bar. Neal will read excerpts from his new book Reflections of a Wine Merchant and will lead you through a tasting of some of the Estates he imports. Books will be available for purchase at the tasting.
"There have been many books about wine, but rarely one as absorbing and as wise as this one. Rosenthal tells of his travels in France and Italy, of his friendships with wine growers, and of his own growing understanding of this ancient business that combines both art and commerce. He writes so well, one can taste the wines he loves." -Charles Simic
A leading importer of limited-production wines of character and quality takes us on an intimate tour through family-owned vineyards in France and Italy and reflects upon the last three decades of controversy, hype, and change in the world of wine.
In the late 1970s, Neal I. Rosenthal set out to learn everything he could about wine. Today, he is one of the most successful importers of traditionally made wines produced by small family-owned estates in France and Italy. Rosenthal has immersed himself in the culture of Old World wine production, working closely with his growers for two and sometimes three generations. He is one of the leading exponents of the concept of "terroir"-the notion that a particular vineyard site imparts distinct qualities of bouquet, flavor, and color to a wine. In Reflections of a Wine Merchant, Rosenthal brings us into the cellars, vineyards, and homes of these vignerons, and his delightful stories about his encounters, relationships, and explorations-and what he has learned along the way-give us an unequaled perspective on winemaking tradition and what threatens it today.
The Lineup:
Lucien Crochet Sancerre 2005 St. Romain, La Perrieres, Domaine Henri & Giles Buisson 2006 Arbois Rouge Trousseau Jacques Puffeney "Berangeres" 2005 Domaine Philippe Gilbert Menetou-Salon Rouge 2006 Gevrey Chambertin, "En Jouise", Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy 2005 Philippe Foreau Vouvray Moelleux "Clos Naudin" 2005Cost of the tasting $10

| Greetings:
Enjoy a magical night of Pinot Noir with David Hirsch
Join us Wednesday, June 25th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome David Hirsch, owner of Hirsch Vineyards and Winery, to our Wine Bar. We believe that the Sonoma Coast is producing some of the finest Pinot Noir in the United States and David Hirsch is among the leaders of this important growing region. Being given the opportunity to present a vertical of some of his deliciously delicate, perfectly balanced Pinot Noir is an absolute treat for us. This should prove to be a very special and magical evening for Pinot freaks like ourselves. Hirsch Vineyards was established in 1980 on a ridge overlooking the ocean at Fort Ross, Sonoma County. The vineyard truly appears to be perched on the edge of the world. It was the first vineyard in the region planted to the production of premium Pinot Noir. Their focus has paid off with a consistent string of marvelous, enchanting wines.
Hirsch Winery was set up in 2002 specifically to learn more about the site. Here winemaking is an extension of viticulture: the link in the chain of winegrowing where grapes are transformed by native yeasts into wine. This unique site produces fruit and wines of unusual acidity and balance with a vintage specific concentration of charming Pinot Noir fruit. Tonight we will taste a vertical of David's Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir along with the first release of his new M cuvee.
Come taste the unique character of this special site and sample a vertical of Pinot Noir from the first vintage produced there to the latest release. Having David Hirsch at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant to guide us through the evening will make it even more informative and enlightening.
