JJ Buckley Fine Wines Presents a Tasting and Dinner With the "Three Ladies of Bordeaux" on Monday, May 12th in San FranciscoArt, wine, and the women of Bordeaux – this is one event you do not want to miss! It's our pleasure to invite you to a wine event unlike any we have hosted before! The "Three Ladies of Bordeaux," Pauline Vauthier (Chateau Ausone), Coralie de Boüard (Chateau Angelus), and Juliette Bécot (Chateau Beau-Séjour Bécot) are going to be in San Francisco and only with JJ Buckley. They are three of the most talented winemakers in the region and help produce some of the most celebrated wines in all of Bordeaux. Please join us for a tasting of their wines on May 12th at 4:00 pm at the Art Engine Gallery in San Francisco followed by a four course dinner at 7:00 pm at Bacar Restaurant. Pauline Vauthier has worked for leading wineries in France and South Africa and now works at the famed Chateau Ausone, which has been owned by her family for more than 400 years. Ausone is one of only two wines to receive the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé. It has received three 100 point ratings from Robert Parker and is one of the most sought after Bordeaux wines thanks to the efforts of Pauline and her father. Other wines produced by the family include Chateau Moulin Saint-Georges and Chateau de Fonbel.
Juliette Bécot was born and raised at Chateau Beau-Séjour Bécot, the property of her father and grandfather. Later, she purchased a parcel of land in the Côtes de Castillon appellation in order to fulfill her dream of making wine. This solo project, called Joanin Bécot, has turned into one of the best estates in the Côtes de Castillon district. Also produced by the family is the garagiste effort Chateau La Gomerie.
And last but not least, also in attendance will be Coralie de Boüard, part owner of Chateau Angelus and assistant winemaker at La Fleur de Boüard. Born and raised in Saint-Émilion at Chateau Angelus, she studied winemaking at the Institute of Oenology in Bordeaux and she now uses her expertise to aid her father Hubert in the winemaking process. Chateau Angelus is one of the finest estates in the region, consistently garnering high scores from critics across the board, and according to Robert Parker, La Fleur de Boüard is "the undisputed reference point for high quality in Lalande de Pomerol."
The tasting will take place in the Art Engine Gallery featuring the work of Kathrine Worel, whose multilayered drawings challenge traditional narratives by juxtaposing sunny, childlike innocence against darker undercurrents. Working with graphite and acrylic over old book pages, she purposefully dissolves the distinctions between ground and surface to reveal language at odds with the superficial preciousness her work – at first glance – presents. For those who would like to attend the tasting portion only, tickets are $20 per person. To attend the dinner portion only, the cost is $175 per person, all inclusive. Space at the dinner is limited to only 25 guests, so please reserve early to guarantee a spot. If you’d like to attend both the tasting and dinner, the total ticket price is $185. ~ Special Wine Event ~
Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Winery
Afternoon Talk and Tasting
|
|
|
Saturday, May 24th, 2008
3:00 pm
|
|
|
We've
begun to think of our Wine In Time old-wine program as something of a
learning adventure, advancing the central idea that we want to offer
"genuine" wines (wines that proceed from a serious and dedicated
source, having the character which they appear or claim to have, that
are authentic, true, and free of misrepresentation or pretense). In our
journey, we are trying to understand wines in the ways that winemakers
think about wines and what happens to wine over time. Our travel
partner and guide on May 24th will be a favorite of ours, Randall Grahm
of Bonny Doon Vineyard.
|
|
Randall's
approach to wine is fun, brilliant, honest and real. He is a seeker.
After huge successes with wines like Le Cigare Volant, the Ca' del Solo
range, Old Telegram, and Big House Red, Grahm experienced a sort of
existential crisis in virtue of the scale to which his operation had
grown and decided to pare the company down to a size that was
manageable and capable of congruency to his deep values of terroir and originality. He remains one of the most active, hungry thinkers we know.
And
so...the other day, Randall Grahm showed up here at Oliveto looking
quite cheerful, possibly a little self-satisfied. He wanted us to
taste his new wines. Each was delicious.
So
on Saturday afternoon, the 24th of May, we'll taste a few of them again
with as many of you who want to come, and listen to an informal talk as
Grahm describes his current projects and preoccupations: Biodynamics, terroir,
complete-ingredient labeling, and, in particular, the subject of
screw-top caps and bottle closures. He will present a side by side
comparison of the 2001 Le Cigare Volant bottled with cork closure and en screwcap.
He asked if, at this event, he might get technical in describing
oxidation and reduction; we think we're up for the challenge. And
there will be plenty of time for discussion.
|
|
The Specs:
We will be tasting two or three wines during Randall's afternoon talk.
Call (510) 547-5356 for reservations for the talk & tasting. No Fee.
Randall
will be at Oliveto for dinner that evening, along with the following
wines & some older vintages, offered by the glass and in a series.

| Greetings:
|
Join us Wednesday, May 28th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Lee Hudson, owner of Hudson Vineyards, and David Ramey, proprietor Ramey Cellars to our Wine Bar.
Lee Hudson is one fine farmer and owns one of the premier vineyards in
Napa Valley down in Carneros. His vineyard name appears on the wine
labels from a who's who list of superb winemakers. He even bottles wine
under his own label that are simply outstanding. The list of 32
wineries that proudly proclaim Hudson Vineyards as the source of their
grapes includes Arietta, Ramey, Kongsgaard, Signorello, Neyers, Havens,
and many other well-known names. Tonight Lee is joined by one the
winemakers who considers himself lucky to purchase these sought after
grapes, David Ramey, a famous winemaker in his own right. The two of
them should be a wealth of information and provide tremendous insight
into what makes this piece of land so special. We will also be able to
taste several wines who trace their origins to this vineyard mecca. As
a special treat we are pouring the Arietta H Block, Hudson Vineyard, a
blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, styled after wine from the right
bank of Bordeaux. We will finish the tasting with the stunning Hudson
Vineyards Syrah, an amazing feat of smoked meat and dark brooding
flavors as close to a Northern Rhone wine as we have had from the U.S.
Lee
founded his stellar vineyard site in 1981 and has been a staple in the
short list of super premium grape suppliers that have a waiting list
for their grapes. The peaceful setting of Hudson Vineyards belies the
energy, intensity and passion of Lee Hudson. Born and raised in
Houston, Texas, Lee received his B.S. in Horticulture at the University
of Arizona. He then worked with the esteemed Jacques Seysses of Domaine
Dujac, in Morey St. Denis, Burgundy; learning that great grapes from
hallowed vineyard sites produce truly world class, fine wines. Lee
returned to the States to continue his studies in viticulture and
enology at University of California at Davis, where many of his
classmates are now his clients.
Come taste Chardonnay, Syrah and
a Cabernet Franc blend from this fabulous site. We are sure that this
rare opportunity to compare different varietals from various wineries
all from one source will be a unique insight into the concept of
terroir and vineyard selection. Having Lee Hudson himself and David Ramey at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. to illuminate the evening will make it even more special.
