Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, April 2nd, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Mike Hirby, owner and winemaker of Relic Wines to our Wine Bar. After a brief career as a sommelier, Mike became the assistant winemaker at Behrens & Hitchcock before leaving to create Relic Wines and consult for such luminary wineries as Realm, Rockledge, and Sherwin Family Vineyards. His career has continued to blossom ever since, garnering high critical praise for many of his various efforts.

Relic Wines is the shared dream of Mike Hirby and Schatzi Throckmorton, whose focus has always been to make delicious wines that are natural expressions of their vineyards. To that end they focus on making Syrah, Pinot Noir, and a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend called Artefact. They source the fruit for their Syrah and Pinot Noir from two key high elevation vineyards, one in Napa and the other in Mendocino. The spectacular Richard Perry Vineyard above Coombsville is the source for their Napa Syrah. The Alder Springs Vineyard is their source for amazing Pinot Noir and Syrah in Mendocino. Artefact is a Napa Valley blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Petit Verdot, and just 10% Syrah for added depth of color and intense aromatics. As a special treat, Mike and Schatzi have provided a small amount of their yet to be released 2006 Alder Springs Syrah as a preview of things to come. We will be able to taste two vintages side by side from the same vineyard.

We are sure you will love meeting this charming young man who should be on everyone's list of winemakers to keep an eye on. Help us welcome Mike Hirby and his lovely partner Schatzi Throckmorton to the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant as they guide us through a tour of their wines from Napa and Mendocino. You will certainly enjoy tasting these distinctive, exuberant wines that show the passion and dedication of one of the new young guns of Napa Valley.

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, April 16th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Gray Hartley and Frank Ostini, owners of Hitching Post Winery to our Wine Bar. If you are a fan of Santa Barbara Pinot Noir or saw the hit movie, 'Sideways,' you will know the name Hitching Post. It was their legendary Highliner Pinot Noir that was one of the major wine stars of that quirky movie. Now you have the opportunity to find out what all the fuss was about and meet the two gentlemen responsible for this wildly popular winery.

Frank Ostini is the chef/owner of the Hitching Post II restaurant and is one of the funniest, lovingly whacky people we have met in the wine world. He looks like a Marx Brother with his wooly mustache and ever-present pith helmet and has an attitude to match. His good buddy and former fisherman, Gray Hartley, perfectly matches Frank's irreverent attitude and goofy sense of humor. Together, they form the team that makes remarkable Pinot Noir and Syrah at Hitching Post Winery and whose names adorn the banner at the top of their wine label.

They began making wine at home in 1979 and finally moved the operation to a winery in 1984 when they produced their first Hitching Post wine. Their reputation for superb wine also grew as time went on, until fame and fortune truly blossomed as one of the featured wines and the pivotal restaurant in the movie, 'Sideways.' Luckily, this good fortune did not spoil this humble duo as they continue to craft magnificent wines, yet refuse to charge ridiculous prices for a product they love to make. Their down to earth, practical attitude is refreshing in a business where it seen all too rarely. Thank heaven for Hartley Ostini.

We are sure you will love meeting these two terrific friends as they join us at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. Help us welcome Frank Ostini and Gray Hartley as they guide us through wines from Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Los Alamos, the best sites of Santa Barbara County. They are sure to bring a smile to your lips with their humor and their distinctive, expressive wines.

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, April 30th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Peter Wasserman of Becky Wasserman Selections to our Wine Bar. All right all you Burgundy freaks, we know you're out there and this is the tasting you have been waiting for. We have invited Peter Wasserman, representing his family's fine Burgundy exporter, Becky Wasserman Selections, to come to our Wine Bar and pour some of the finest wines in his portfolio. Debbie Zachareas worked closely with Peter to fine tune these selections from a broad range of producers, appellations, and vintages going back several decades. It was hard work narrowing their immense variety of stellar wines down to just five precious choices. They chose recent vintages to manage the cost and to be able to make more wine available for retail sale.

Come taste "nothing but the best" of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the region where they first emerged. There will be three Premier Cru and two Grand Cru from two terrific vintages featured in this monumental evening. When you combine loftily-rated vineyards, great producers, and excellent vintages, the results are predictably memorable and rare. When you have someone as knowledgeable and close to the source as Peter Wasserman on hand to comment on such fine offerings the evening becomes even more special.

We are sure you will love meeting this Burgundy expert when he joins us at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. Help us welcome Peter Wasserman as he guides us through wines from some of the best sites of this legendary region. It is a night destined to be one of the highlights of the year.
