Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, January 9th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Jennifer and Ross Halleck, Proprietors of Halleck Vineyard to our Wine Bar. Catch a rising star of Pinot Noir as they ascend the ranks of the wine world. Halleck's first harvest was in 1999 and their popularity has been growing ever since. As more people discover the distinct character and astounding quality of the unique offerings from Halleck, the number of loyal followers continues to swell. We are proud to present this winery while there is still wine to be purchased. They are surely destined to join the ranks of the highly allocated, impossible to find wineries. With grapes from their family-owned one acre vineyard along with fruit from some nearby vineyards in their beloved Sebastopol area, the Hallecks are producing six wines in tiny quantities. They make a mouth-watering Sauvignon Blanc to accompany their crisp, spicy Gewurztraminer for their whites. The only red wine they produce is Pinot Noir, but they make four different bottlings that are magical and distinctive. One of the Pinots is even named to honor their three young boys pictured below. Their goal is to concentrate on the extraordinary grape growing region surrounding Sebastopol in the Russian River Valley. They strive to share "a piece of this heaven-on-earth" with fellow wine lovers in the form of bottled excellence. They quickly acknowledge that 95% of what is in the wine bottle comes from the vineyard. In other words, the vineyard is where the winemaking really takes place. That is why they are so thrilled to be working in the cool climate of Russian River Valley where Pinot Noir thrives.

At this special tasting, Jennifer and Ross Halleck, the owners responsible for this meteoric success, will be at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant to share their passion for the Russian River Valley and these lovely wines. Help us welcome them and experience this charming, talented couple and their delicious wines first hand.

Join us for a very special tasting of outstanding wines from the Loire Valley, France.  $10 for the complete tasting this Saturday, 1/5/08, from 2-5:30pm.  In addition, enjoy 15% off the purchase of all the tasting wines through 1/5/08.

nv Montlouis Sur Loire, François Chidaine, Méthode Traditional $19.95

(Tasting Price: $16.96)
Produced from Chidaine's own biodynamically farmed vineyards in the small appellation of Montlouis.  Yields here are quite low for sparkling wine and the finished product contains no dosage.  The vineyards average 20-50 years and the wine is composed entirely of Chenin Blanc.  Bright yellow color with a nose of white flowers and candied citrus peel.  This wine shows a combination of finesse, minerality and power with a finish that is both delicate and ethereal.

2006 Vouvray, Huet "Le Haut Lieu" $29.95
(Tasting Price: $25.46)
Often known as Huet's most delicate and ethereal of vineyard holdings, Le Haut Lieu's vines average over 80 years and produce elegant and age-worthy Chenin Blanc.  Just released, the 2006 has what it takes to gracefully age for a decade or more.  Bracing and nervy in its infancy, the wine's layered fruit and mineral core are justly supported by brilliant levels of acidity and more subtle notes of  wool, honeycomb and baked pears.

2006 Sancerre, Château de Maimbray $24.95
(Tasting Price: $21.21)
This traditional producer of red, white and pink Sancerre generates finite amounts of wine for export to the states.  Robert Chadderdon is the exclusive importer adding additional mystery to Maimbray's already elusive reputation.  Perhaps he feels that the wine should speak for itself and speak it does!  Like the man, the wines are delicately crafted and full of subtlety.  The current release possesses a green, tangy citrus core reminiscent of a zesty Marlborough Sauvignon.

2006 Sancerre, Roger Neveu $24.95
(Tasting Price: $21.21)
This full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel with no oak influence masking the wine's regional identity (an unfortunate trend in a growing number of modern producers).  What you will find here is nothing but bright, in-your-face fruit, luscious acidity and stony minerals.  Sancerre is always a classic with a salad of mixed greens, fresh chevre and pickled beets.

2006 Reuilly Rouge, Guy Malbete $18.95
(Tasting Price: $16.11)
Cabernet Franc isn't the only red grape varietal grown in the Loire Valley.  Although hugely successful and quite prolific in terms of total number of vines planted, the other great red of the Loire is most certainly Pinot Noir. The Pinot that is grown in Reuilly is some of the purest and freshest Pinot that you will come across.  Brimming with blueberry and cherry fruit and followed by a soft herbal essence that mixes savory with sweet.  The wine finishes with slightly sappy and dusty nuances and is perfect with grilled salmon.

2006 Chinon, Baudry "Les Grezeaux" $22.00
(Tasting Price: $18.70)
Cabernet Franc has long been celebrated on Bordeaux's right bank where it represents a lion's share of the total vineyard plantings.  It has also enjoyed a long reign in the Loire Valley as one of France's best-kept secrets.  Not only does it have remarkable aging potential but it also pairs extraordinarily well with a whole host of dishes from grilled meats to pan-seared fish, burgers or grilled veggies.  In its youth, this dynamic red offers up generous amounts of dusty cherry fruit, raspberry, gritty, earthy spice, bright acidity and fine-grained tannins.

2005 Quarts de Chaume, Domaine des Baumard 375ml $44.95
(Tasting Price: $38.21)
"A jaw dropper, with orange blossom, persimmon, fig and quince flavors that remain remarkably bright and light thanks to riveting acidity and a superfine, minerally finish. Pure and perfectly balanced, this refuses to break down in the mouth. The best since the monster 1995. Drink now through 2032." (98 Wine Spectator)

Lost Canyon Winery is thrilled to offer the following in its monthly series on wine and food appreciation:

Jill Giacomini Basch, of Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company

January 19th from 4:00-6:00 PM at Lost Canyon Winery

Cheese Tasting and Lecture, Wine Pairing

We here in the Bay Area are very fortunate to be sitting at the epicenter of some of the best contemporary cheese in the world. All across California - northern and southern - a number of dedicated artisans are shaking up old notions of taste and craftsmanship and setting new standards in innovation and sustainability.  Jill Giacomini Basch, one of the owners of Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company, makers of the award-winning Point Reyes Original Blue, will take us on a tour of some of her favorite local artisanal cheeses.  In addition, she'll lead the class in understanding what defines a specialty cheese, an artisanal cheese and a farmstead cheese (yes, there is a difference!).  She'll also share her insight about the entirety of the process, from farm to table.  We'll enjoy Jill's favorites with a selection of Lost Canyon's cheese-friendly Syrahs.

Join us on Saturday, January 19th from 4:00-6:00 PM at Lost Canyon Winery, 2102 Dennison Street, Oakland, CA94606, 510-534-9314.

Cost is $20 for non-wine club members, $10 for wine club members.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting
The Wine Club San Francisco Presents:
"I was blown away by many of the quality of the top 2005 Cabernet Sauvignons and proprietary blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. I clearly underestimated them last year, and they deserve comparison to another cool year, 1975, which was also highly underrated as well at conception. In any event, 2005 has turned out to be a very strong vintage."-R.Parker

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, January 23rd, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Steve Bloom, President of Tesori Wines to our Wine Bar. The night promises to be like a tour of the entire boot of Italy, from the northern border all the way down to the heel with many tasty stops in between. Steve travels extensively throughout Italy and can regale us with many detailed stories of the people and places behind these amazing wines. He prides himself on scouring the countryside to bring back undiscovered gems made with passion and tradition. Because he is so successful at finding tiny beauties, his wines often represent fantastic bargains when compared to other wines of the region. We have always enjoyed tasting with Steve and we are sure you will treasure the experience as well. We proudly carry several of his imports on an ongoing basis because they are simply wonderful. The range of wines he will be offering is staggering: from a single vineyard Gewurztraminer, an organically grown Puglia red, a silky blend from Molise, a single vineyard Barolo from a plot that faces the castle of Barolo itself, to a rising star of Valpolicella. These award-winning wines are sure to please. If you like Italian wines or want to educate yourself about them, this is an evening not to be missed.

On this special evening, Steve Bloom will be at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant to share his detailed inside knowledge of these fabulous Italian wines. Help us welcome him and learn about these distinctive wines from the man who brings them to this country.
