2004 California Cabernet Tasting
The Wine Club San Francisco Presents:
When: Sat March 24th 1-4pm
Cost: $40
"As more 2004 Cabernets pass through Wine Spectator's Napa office, the strength of this vintage becomes more apparent. What I find compelling about these wines is the ripe, fleshy, pure fruit, fine balance and sense of elegance."-James Laube Wine Spectator
"2004 has always been a vintage of exceptional charm, a small crop, and a ripe year, but not exceptionally concentrated. Virtually every varietal seems to have a front end-loaded fruit component that makes the wines tasty and seductive. It is hard not to like this vintage. The best examples, which are concentrated, dense, and impeccably well-balanced, will age well, especially the finest Cabernet Sauvignons"-R.Parker Wine Advocate #167, Dec 2006.
The Line-Up
2004 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon 1.5 Stag's Leap District
93pts Wine Spectator, (90-92pts) Parker
2004 Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2004 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville
2004 Von Strasser Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain Estate
92pts Wine Spectator, 92pts Tanzer
2004 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2004 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill
2004 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
90pts Parker, (89-90pts) Tanzer
2004 Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
93pts Parker
2004 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon

03 Cabernet TWC price:$79.99
#12 Etude Tony Soter’s deft skill with Cabernet reveals rich, concentrated fruit with elegance and refinement. These wines age beautifully. (James Laube) November 16, 2006
05 Pinot Noir TWC price:$37.99
Most Popular Pinot Noirs - #3.
Wine & Spirits 17th Annual Restaurant Poll, April 2006.

04 Heirloom Pinot TWC price:$74.99
Wine Advocate. Rated 92
Etude's finest Pinot is always the Heirloom, and the 2004 is a gorgeously textured, rich, full-bodied Pinot Noir with sweet plum, forest floor, and gamey notes intermixed with plenty of sweet cherry and plum fruit. Beautiful texture, full body, terrific depth, and richness suggest this wine might even deserve a higher score with another several years of bottle age. It should age nicely for up to a decade. (Robert Parker, Jr.) December 26, 2006
For 20 years, Soter, 51, was one of Napa's most successful winemaking consultants, giving advice and services to wineries that today are among the cult Cabernet Sauvignon-producing elite -- Araujo, Dalla Valle, Niebaum- Coppola, Shafer, Spottswoode and Viader. He added his own Napa Valley brand, Etude Wines -- high-end Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Blanc -- to his repertoire in 1982.

Excerpt from Linda Murphy, Chronicle Wine Editor

Thursday, November 6, 2003
"(Etude) is now a specialty company within a company, like cars, where Fiat owns Ferrari," he says. "I have more hoops to jump through and there are more employees -- I had three previously -- but now I have fantastic resources and I'm able to deal with big-picture stuff."
Soter's Etude Carneros Pinot Noirs ($40) are known for their youthful, spicy, deeply flavored fruit character; they're typically rich and toasty, yet with a sense of elegance, with fine-grained tannins and suppleness. The Etude Heirloom Carneros Pinots ($80), made from the best barrels of wine from each vintage and named for the mix of clones (like heirloom tomatoes) that exists in the vineyards, tend to be bolder and richer than the Carneros, with sweet black fruit, smoke and silky tannins.

Ferry Plaza Wine Merchants

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, March 28th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Pax Mahle to our Wine Bar. Pax Mahle is now firmly established as a new shining star in the California Syrah firmament. Many serious lovers of big, juicy, rich, powerful California Syrah and Rhone blends have already discovered this young winemaker and his superb wines. They also know how hard they are to find for purchase, much less taste. Pax sells a majority of his wines to fans on his cherished mailing list, and thus you rarely see them on retail shelves. Now, at the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant Wine Bar you can taste a 5 wine flight of 2005 Pax new releases and chat with the man himself. Ask him what he looks for in vineyard sources, what sort of barrels he prefers, what he eats with his wines, or even what his favorite movie is. Ask him whatever you like! On top of that wonderful opportunity you will also have a chance to purchase some of these beauties after you have sampled and chosen your favorites.

These hard-to-find boutique wines will be available for retail sale while supplies last…

The cost of the flight will be $36 and will include the following wines:

2005 Pax Alder Springs Cuvee, Mendocino County, Retail $90 5oz. glass $25

2005 Pax Cuvee Moriah Sonoma County, Retail $55 5oz. glass $16

2005 Cuvee Christine Sonoma County, Retail $64 5oz. glass $18

2005 Pax Syrah, Walker Vine Hill Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Retail $65 5oz. glass $18

2005 Pax Syrah, Obsidian, Knights Valley, Retail $65 5oz. glass $18

Hope to see you all there!
Debbie, Peter, Bo and the entire FPWM team.

Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards will be playing "tasting room" at the new facility for Equinox winery. They just started weekend tasting hours and have been generous enough to offer space for other local wineries to pour there on a rotating basis. The facility is located at 427 Swift Street on the west side of Santa Cruz and Equinox is in the back around the corner from Alexander Cellars. Equinox makes fantastic methode Champagnoise sparkling wine and a few interesting table wines. The two dates we will be there are:
