2005 GERMAN RIESLINGS TUESDAY 2/6 & WEDNESDAY 2/7
This is our first showing of German wines in at least fifteen years. We were lured by the excitement about the
2005’s, a vintage better yet than the exceptional 2001’s and 2003’s. Here is the first of several 2005 flights. See
page 5 for tasting notes and prices.
2005 Riesling Kabinett “Kinheimer Rosenberg” (Jakoby-Mathy); 2005 Riesling Kabinett “Maximiner
Herrenberg” (Schmitt-Wagner); 2005 Riesling “Nahe” (Dönnhoff); 2005 Riesling Kabinett “Wehlener
Sonnenuhr” (Selbach-Oster); 2005 Riesling Spatlese “Saarburger Rausch” (Zilliken); 2005 Riesling Spatlese
“Wehlener Sonnenuhr” (Willi Schaefer); 2005 Riesling Auslese “Bernkastler Budstube” (Selbach-Oster).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BRUNO CLAIR RED BURGUNDIES THURSDAY 2/8
Here are four of Bruno Clair’s recently-arrived 2004’s, including his great “La Dominode” and “Clos de Beze”
bottlings. Also included are a couple of older vintages for comparison.
2004 Marsannay “Les Grasses Têtes” (Bruno Clair); 2004 Savigny-Les-Beaune “La Dominode” (Bruno Clair);
2000 Savigny-Les-Beaune “La Dominode” (Bruno Clair); 2004 Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Cazetiers” (Bruno
Clair); 1998 Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Cazetiers” (Bruno Clair); 2004 Chambertin-Clos de Beze (Bruno Clair).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPES: $30 - $40 FRIDAY 2/9 & SATURDAY 2/10
Some Châteauneuf-du-Pape has gotten expensive. There are plenty of bottles now in the $50 - $100 price range,
some of them really exciting and worth the high price. But there is a large level of interest in more moderately
priced wines. This tasting showcases eight excellent Châteauneuf-du-Papes that frontline for $30 to $40. See page
2 for tasting notes and prices.
2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Télégramme” (Vieux Télégraphe); 2000 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Classique”
(Montpertuis); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Vieilles Vignes” (La Millière); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Domaine
du Cristia); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Tradition” (Cuvée du Vatican); 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Mourre de
Perdrix” (La Charbonnière); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Baron” (Chateau Fortia); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(Clos du Mont Olivet).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ZINFANDEL TUESDAY 2/13 & WEDNESDAY 2/14
Two of our favorite Zin producers are Bucklin and Saxon-Brown. They both produce wines from very, very old
vineyards (over 100 years) in Sonoma Valley, and their wines show a complexity and class that is rare in California
Zinfandel today. Also included are recent releases from Ridge, Brown Estate and Turley.
2005 Zinfandel “Mixed Blacks” (Bucklin); 2004 Zinfandel “Parmalee Hill-Stonewall” (Saxon-Brown); 2002
Zinfandel “Casa Santinamaria” (Saxon-Brown); 2004 Zinfandel “Old Hill Ranch” (Bucklin); 2004 Zinfandel
“Geyserville” (Ridge); 2004 Zinfandel “Pagani Ranch” (Ridge); 2004 Zinfandel “Napa Valley” (Brown Estate);
2004 Zinfandel “Hayne” (Turley).
AUSTRIAN SUPERSTAR BRUNDLMAYER THURSDAY 2/15
Brundlmayer is generally considered Austria’s best winery, partly for its ongoing excellence, partly for its role in
leading the revival of the Austrian wine scene in the 1990’s and being an inspiration and guiding light to other
producers. Here is a spectacular array of their wines, including three vintages of the extraordinary Riesling “Lyra”.
2005 Gruner Veltliner “Kamptaler Terrassen” (Brundlmayer); 2005 Riesling “Kamptaler Terrassen”
(Brundlmayer); 2003 Riesling “Heiligenstein” (Brundlmayer); 2005 Gruner Veltliner “Kaferberg” (Brundlmayer);
2003 Riesling “Heiligenstein-Lyra” (Brundlmayer); 2004 Riesling “Heiligenstein-Lyra” (Brundlmayer); 2005
Riesling “Heiligenstein-Lyra” (Brundlmayer); 1983 Gruner Veltliner Auslese (Brundlmayer).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 RED BURGUNDIES: CÔTE DE NUITS FRIDAY 2/16 & SATURDAY 2/17
The 2004’s from the Côte de Nuits seem to have added weight and density since last year. The wines in several
recent tastings have been more impressive than anticipated, and seem to resemble the excellent 2001’s in style.
Here are some excellent wines from Bruno Clair, Mongeard-Mugneret and Michel Gros.
2004 Marsannay “Les Longerois” (Bruno Clair); 2004 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Veroilles” (Bruno Clair); 2004
Nuits-Saint-Georges (Michel Gros); 2004 Nuits-Saint-Georges “Les Boudots” (Mongeard-Mugneret); 2004
Vosne-Romanee “Clos des Réas” (Michel Gros); 2004 Echezeaux “Vieille Vigne” (Mongeard-Mugneret); 2004
Gevrey-Chambertin “Clos Saint Jacques” (Bruno Clair); 2004 Grands Echezeaux (Mongeard-Mugneret).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIRS TUESDAY 2/20 & WEDNESDAY 2/21
Pinot Noir is the most popular category of California wine in our shop. No wonder. The hits just keep on
coming, and for the quality, prices remain reasonable (something that cannot be said about other California
categories). Here are eight of our best right now, some new arrivals, some restocks of previously sold out favorites.
2004 Pinot Noir “Santa Rita Hills” (Arcadian); 2005 Pinot Noir “Santa Rita Hills” (Melville); 2004 Pinot Noir
“Arroyo Grande” (Talley); 2004 Pinot Noir “Santa Rita’s Earth” (Hartley-Ostini); 2005 Pinot Noir “Santa
Barbara” (Ojai); 2004 Pinot Noir “North Slope” (Hansel); 2003 Pinot Noir “Savoy” (Roessler); 2003 Pinot Noir
“Clos Pepe” (Ojai).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPANISH RARITIES: JORGE ORDONEZ IMPORTS THURSDAY 2/22
These wines will knock your socks off. First, a sensational white from 100-year-old Verdejo vines in Rueda, then
two absolutely killer reds from Jumilla and Toro. Then come three super rarities, one each from Rioja, Jumilla,
and Toro, each amazingly concentrated and powerful and unlike anything you’ve probably tasted from Spain.
2005 Rueda “Naiades” (Bodegas Naia); 2003 Jumilla “Clio” (Bodegas El Nido); 2004 Toro “Numanthia”
(Bodegas Numanthia Termes); 2004 Rioja “El Bosque” (Sierra Cantabria); 2003 Jumilla “El Nido” (Bodegas El
Nido); 2004 Toro “Termanthia” (Bodegas Numanthia Termes).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2005 WHITE BURGUNDIES: JEAN-MARC BOILLOT FRIDAY 2/23 & SATURDAY 2/24
Jean-Marc Boillot’s whites are always luscious. In this great 2005 vintage, they have a little more heft, a little more
spine, and a little more vibrancy. This flight runs the range from Bourgogne Blanc to Grand Cru. See page 3 for
tasting notes and prices.
2005 Bourgogne Blanc (Boillot); 2005 Rully “Gresigny” (Boillot); 2005 Meursault “Les Charrons” (Boillot); 2005
Puligny-Montrachet (Boillot); 2005 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Referts” (Boillot); 2005 Puligny-Montrachet
“Champ-Canet” (Boillot); 2005 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Combettes” (Boillot); 2005 Batard-Montrachet
(Boillot).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALIFORNIA RHONES TUESDAY 2/27 & WEDNESDAY 2/28
New releases from Tablas Creek, Saxum and Turley were the catalysts for setting up this tasting. Also of particular
interest is our first Grenache from Ojai.
2004 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc “Paso Robles” (Tablas Creek); 2002 Petite Sirah “Dry Creek” (William Knuttel);
2004 M5 “Santa Ynez” (Margerum); 2003 Grenache “Purisma” (Ojai); 2004 Esprit de Beaucastel Rouge “Paso
Robles” (Tablas Creek); 2003 Petite Sirah “Sirius” (Sean Thackrey); 2004 James Berry “Paso Robles” (Saxum);
2004 Petite Sirah “Hayne” (Turley).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 RED BURGUDNIES: MONGEARD-MUGNERET THURSDAY 3/1
Vincent Mongeard’s Burgundies are remarkably consistent in style, year after year. And it’s a seductive style, with
luscious fruit and smoky oak. Here are six of his recently-arrived 2004s, including his Richebourg.
2004 Savigny-les-Beaune “Les Narbantons” (Mongeard-Mugneret); 2004 Gevrey-Chambertin (Mongeard-
Mugneret); 2004 Vosne-Romanée (Mongeard-Mugneret); 2004 Vosne-Romanée “Les Orveaux” (Mongeard-
Mugneret); 2004 Clos Vougeot (Mongeard-Mugneret); 2004 Richebourg (Mongeard-Mugneret).

I was just talking to Ms T about this. We are thinking of going. This also looks pretty interesting:

Ferry Wine Plaza Merchants

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, February 7th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome David Ramey to our Wine Bar. David is widely considered one of the premier winemakers in the United States and has been instrumental in forging the reputations of several much respected California wineries. If you have been enjoying California wine for any length of time, you have probably drunk a wine that David made. After graduating from UC Davis, he worked at Chateau Petrus in Pomerol to experience the time-honored French winemaking techniques. He moved back to California to start as assistant winemaker at Simi Winery before moving on to become head winemaker at Matanzas Creek. After making a name for himself there he accepted the winemaking job at Chalk Hill, and then moved back to Bordeaux to again work with Jean-Pierre Moueix (Petrus). The Moueix family later asked him to return to the Napa Valley to work with Christian Moueix at Dominus Estate. He went on to work with Leslie Rudd to help establish Rudd Estate. He is now a consulting winemaker for several wineries, and has his own label, Ramey, with his wife Carla. Tonight we will be featuring the Ramey label and focusing on his stellar Chardonnay offerings from several vineyards. In addition, David has pulled an older bottling from his library to share with us in order to observe how his Chardonnays can age. This will be a treat of the first magnitude.

The cost of the flight will be $32 and will include the following wines:

2005 Russian River Valley, Retail $39
2004 Ritchie Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Retail $60
2004 Hyde Vineyard, Carneros, Retail $58
2004 Hudson Vineyard, Carneros, Retail $58
2001 Hyde Vineyard, Carneros, Retail $72

Hope to see you all there!
Debbie, Peter, Bo and the entire FPWM team.

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, February 21st, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Greg Brown, owner/winemaker of T-Vine Cellars, to our Wine Bar. T-Vine was the very first winery we featured after opening our doors, and Greg holds a special place in our hearts. In his more than twenty years in the wine industry, Greg Brown has become known for his ripe, juicy, and delicious small lot wines from some of the best vineyards in Napa, Contra Costa, and Sonoma Counties. Greg is an inspiration to all who know him and love his wines, and time drinking T-Vine wines with Greg is always time well spent. His warmth and charm alone are worth the visit; his lovely wines are like the icing on the cake. Greg is consistently one of our favorite producers, and we’re so excited to welcome this one man show back to the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. T-Vine wines quickly sell out every vintage…taste them and see why!

These wines will be available for retail sale while supplies last…the Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon are a sneak preview, and while they are available the night of the tasting, the actual release is in May; re-orders for these two cannot be filled until that time.

The cost of the flight will be $26 and will include the following wines:

2004 T-Vine Merlot, Napa Valley, 390 cases produced (retail: $32)

2004 T-Vine Syrah Frediani Vineyard, Napa Valley, 525 cases produced (retail: $35)

2004 T-Vine Zinfandel, Napa Valley, 650 cases produced
(retail: $32)

2004 T-Vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Monte Rosso Vineyard, Sonoma
500 cases produced (retail: $55)

2004 T-Vine Petite Sirah, Napa Valley, 675 cases produced (retail: $36)

Hope to see you all there!
