Join us Wednesday, October 25, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Agustin Huneeus to our Wine Bar to present a special vertical flight, or rather a Quintessential flight, of his esteemed Quintessa wines. As the name suggests, Quintessa is one of the most quintessentially Napa Valley luxury wines produced. One might even say Quintessa is a wine that comes from a people and a place that is a match made in heaven.
Agustin Huneeus has been an influential figure on the international wine scene for almost 50 years. Born in Santiago, Chile, he began his career in 1960, as CEO of the fledgling Concha y Toro winery, which he guided to international prominence and eventual growth to become the country’s largest winery. But, political unrest in Chile led Agustin and his wife, Valeria, to the US in 1971. Ensconced in New York, Valeria pursued a PhD in biochemistry at Columbia University, while Agustin headed Seagram’s worldwide wine operations. After moving west to California to run Franciscan Estates, Agustin and Valeria collaborated on developing the Mistral vineyard in Santa Clara County. It was this collaboration that spawned their dream of someday owning their own premium Napa Valley wine estate.
This lofty dream is the reality that is today, Quintessa. Nestled in the northeast corner of Rutherford, the Quintessa estate spans 280 beautiful acres and features a valley, a lake, a river, four microclimates, five hills and many soil types. Planted exclusively to red Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Carmenère (á la Chile), the Quintessa vineyard produces 40 different wine lots from 26 vineyard blocks.
Modeled after the great chateaux of Bordeaux, France, Quintessa is a red meritage blend. But, its tremendous site diversity distinguishes the Quintessa terroir from its other well-heeled neighbors and allows it to express a sense of place rather than a particular varietal blend. Sustainably farmed since 1990, Valeria and Agustin have worked tirelessly to cultivate the land which, as of the 2005 harvest, is now biodynamicly farmed. Today, Quintessa and her stewards, the Huneeus’, really are a match made in heaven.
