The Riesling Festival Why You Should Attend the First Annual Riesling Festival
Many of our longtime customers may remember a particular rant of mine last fall about the marvel that is Riesling. My Riesling Crusade, if you will. It is with great pleasure that I announce the next phase in our devious master plan to fill your glass with the great grape as we unveil our First Annual Riesling Festival “The Unbearable Lightness of Riesling” on Sunday October 15th at the Willowwood Arboretum in Chester, NJ. This event is the brainchild of our resident Master of Wine, Chris Cree, who has always envisioned an event that celebrates Riesling in all its glorious forms. In honor of the event, (and the fact that research states that Top 10 lists are all the rage) I give you the Top 11 reasons why you should attend the Riesling Festival…
The Top Eleven Reasons to Attend the Riesling Festival
#11 – Riesling is Relatively Inexpensive. Especially when compared to White Burgundy, the greatest world-class examples of Riesling can be had for a fraction of Grand Cru White Burgundy. #10 – The Amazing Food of Ixora and Valley Shepherd. Enjoy the fresh, artisanal cheeses of Valley Shepherd in Long Valley and make sure you don’t miss the perfect symbiotic food/wine relationship that is the culinary genius of Tim Chang’s Ixora and the Riesling grape. #9 – Built for the Long Haul. Riesling is amazing for aging due to a wealth of dry extract and high levels of acidity. It just keeps getting better and better as it ages provided it is properly stored. #8 – An International Superstar. Where else can you get the opportunity to try Rieslings from not only Germany, but Austria, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa? #7 – You Can’t Just Drink Chardonnay Forever. Alright, well maybe you can. But you’ve got to get some variety in there sometime. Riesling should fill your thoughts when a change is needed. #6 – It’s the One to Have When You’re Having More Than One. Want to drink a whole bottle of wine and still live to tell about it the next day? While we don’t necessarily recommend drinking a bottle of wine at once, Rieslings are typically lower in alcohol as most Spatlese wines linger around 8% alcohol. Compare that to your average California Chardonnay at 14%+ and it’s easy to see why headaches can be a thing of the past when drinking Riesling. #5 – Food Pairing. No other grape can really compare to Riesling with its ability to morph and meld to almost any dish you throw at it, and make the match memorable. If I had to stockpile one varietal of white wine that could cover just about everything, Riesling would be it. No contest! #4 – It’s Not Just About Sugar. Most people associate Riesling with sweet. While the wine press regularly hands out high marks for the sweetest styles of Riesling, the grape has many, many faces, from bone dry to super sweet. Wine professionals know that some of the most pleasurable wines being made today are dry Rieslings. #3 – Hobnob With An MW. Well, you can actually do that any Saturday at our store, but not always with great Riesling. #2 – Sommeliers’ Drink of Choice. Ask leading sommeliers what they drink, such as Joseph Sauerwein of Alizé in the Palms Resort Las Vegas, who was quoted in Wine & Spirits magazine saying, “The perfect night off? Get together with friends, cook and drink Riesling. We’re all just fanatics for Riesling.” Or how about Tony Cha of Michael Mina in San Francisco when asked what he would do with a million dollars, “…buy older vintages and pick up as much Riesling as possible.” #1 – We Want To Do This Again Next Year. It’s a great excuse for a party as well as helping a good cause in the Willowwood Foundation!
