Ferry Plaza Wine Merchants

Greetings, folks. Want to test your tasting skills??

Join us Wednesday, September 13th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when Edward Wallo, owner of Yorkville Cellars of Mendocino, will be here to present a flight of their finely crafted red wines produced from traditional Bordeaux varieties. Yorkville Cellars was founded in 1988 by Edward and Deborah Wallo when they bought a 110 acre ranch in the town of Yorkville. Yorkville Highlands, now an official AVA, straddles the ridge on Hwy 128 between the Russian River watershed and the Navarro River watershed. There were only a few acres of neglected Sauvignon Blanc on the property the Wallos purchased, but the quality of the fruit those vines yielded was encouraging. With the help and dedication of their vineyard manager, Steve Williams, and application of the latest organic practices, they restored those vines to fine, healthy plants. Over a few years the vineyards were expanded to 30 acres and the first estate wines were bottled in 1994. Winemaker and master blender, Greg Graciano - who knows the vineyards of Mendocino like the back of his hand - joined Yorkville Cellars in 1995 and has made every wine they produce since. Today, thanks to this talented team’s collective efforts, Yorkville Cellars is at the vanguard of organic farming and has played a part in putting Mendocino wines on the map. The evening will showcase how organic grapes can make truly delicious and inspired wines.

The cost of the flight will be $18:

2004 Malbec, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino $22
2004 Merlot, Yorkville HighlandsMendocino $20
2003 Petit Verdot, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino $22
2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino $20
2003 Cabernet Franc, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino $20

Since these varieties are often blended, we’re going to have some fun with the format and let you try to guess which wine is which.

Hope to see you all there!
Debbie, Peter, Bo and the entire FPWM team

This is your chance to taste a 100 point wine!

Gaja Tasting
Saturday 14th 2006 1-4 pm
$50 Hosted by: David Goodwin

The Wine Club San Francisco

Due to the Labor Day Holiday weekend we've decided to reschedule the 2000 Gaja tasting for this Saturday the 14th from 1-4pm.

2000 Gaja Sperss Langhe D.O.C. - 95
Incredible amount of fruit and character in this wine, with mint, mineral, blackberry and plum aromas turning to tobacco and tar. Full-bodied, with an iron-cast core of fruit and velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Incredibly tight and powerful. Give this a decade. From Gaja’s 30-acre vineyard in the Barolo-producing zone of Serralunga. Best after 2013. July 31, 2004 WS

2000 Gaja Sorí Tildín Langhe - 96
Amazing aromas of plums, strawberries and minerals follow through to a fullbodied palate, with ultraripe tannins and a long, mineral and blackberry aftertaste. Gorgeous. So fresh and structured.

July 31, 2004 WS

2000 Gaja Sorí San Lorenzo Langhe - 97
Serious dark color, with meaty, earthy aromas that blow off to ultraripe and exotic fruit. Fresh truffles and porcini. Almost Port-like in the end. Full-bodied, with masses of velvety tannins and a long, long, caressing finish. Solid. July 31, 2004 WS

2000 Gaja Costa Russi Langhe - 100
Fabulous aromas of rose petals and cherries with hints of raspberries. Fullbodied, with ultrafine tannins and an incredible finish. This is so fine and so long. A real beauty that grows and grows on the palate. Great Nebbiolo. Greatest Costa Russi ever, from 34-year-old vines. July 31, 2004 WS

Hope to see you there!

Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, September 27th, 4:30-7:30pm, when Hiram Simon, Wine Importer Extraordinaire, will be here to present a unique flight of Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Vintage Riojas. Hold on to your hats on this one, folks - we are going to experience something truly rare and special: a vertical tasting of vintage Riojas from one of the oldest fine wine estates in all of Spain, Lopez de Heredia. Founded in 1877 and still owned by the Lopez de Heredia family, this winery is considered one of Spain's most important traditional style Bodegas. Hiram Simon, an expatriate Brit who is erudite, charming, and one of California’s finest wine importers, will regale us with the rich history of this storied estate and guide us through a flight of Riojas dating as far back as the 1976 vintage.

Long established as one of the greatest wine regions in Spain, the vineyards of Rioja straddle the Ebro River in the remote interior of the north, about an hour south of the coastal city of Bilbao. Thanks to its proximity to the Bordeaux region in the south of France, Rioja indeed has many French roots and in its early development was heavily influenced by the winemaking practices of the Bordelais. As in Bordeaux, Rioja wines have traditionally been a blend of grapes, with the wonderful Tempranillo being predominant, much like Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux. But, in contrast to Cabernet, Tempranillo in Rioja tends to express itself with an intriguing earthy character and elegance, as opposed to the bigger, more powerful essence of Cabernet. Riojas are also traditionally aged in oak well before release and in the case of the Gran Reservas we’ll explore, must be aged for at least two years in oak barrels and may not be sold until the 6th year after the vintage. In fact, these wines have been cellared exclusively at the Lopez de Heredia estate and are only released upon order from Hiram Simon for events such as ours.

Whether you consider yourself a wine geek with a fancy cellar collection or you’re just starting to discover the wonderful world of wine, this will be an awe-inspiring evening that will impress any and all who taste these fascinating wines.

The cost of the flight will be $45 and will feature the following wines:

1976 Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain - $118 Retail
1978 Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain - $110 Retail
1981 Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain - $84 Retail
1985 Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain - $81 Retail
1998 Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva, Rioja, Spain - $42 Retail

Hope to see you all there! Debbie, Peter, Bo and the entire FPWM team
