Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant - San Francisco

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, May 10th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Aaron Campbell to our Wine Bar to present a flight of wines from the new appellations of Spain. A multi-lingual Californian, Aaron has been importing Spanish wines for over a dozen years and has enthusiastically watched the Spanish wine industry expand its horizons beyond the traditional Tempranillo blends of Rioja. Preferring to work with regions like Cariñena, Almansa, and Toro, Aaron is part of a new wave of importers that highlight the talents of winemakers who blend creativity, modern winemaking, and traditional regional pride. This more modern approach has allowed Spanish vintners to produce wines that express greater varietal character and more distinctive terroir, often at much better values. So, we thought it would be fun to give you an opportunity to meet an exciting young importer and let him lead you through the new Spain; after all, Spanish wine isn’t just Rioja any more!

The cost of the flight will be $18 and will include the following wines:

NV 1+1=3 Cava Brut, Penedes, Spain, Retail $13
2004 Vinos Sin-Ley Garnacha, Cariñena, Spain, Retail $12
2004 Higueruela Garnacha, Almansa, Spain, Retail $12
2004 Arrocal, Ribera del Duero, Spain, Retail $14
2002 San Ramon, Toro, Spain, Retail $47

See you there! Debbie, Peter, Bo and all of us at FPWM.

Ferry Plaza Wine Merchants

Greetings:

Join us Wednesday, May 24th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Dino Capriotti to our Wine Bar. A passionate importer who is known for seeking out top producers from untapped Italian regions, Dino will present a flight of wines from what we think of as the rising star appellations of Italy. Dino first fell in love with wine as a boy toiling in his family’s home vineyard in the Medieval coastal town of Offida, in the Marche region of Italy. Now as president of Vinity Wine Company, Dino is a proud Italian, famous within the wine business for educating eager retailers and restaurateurs as they strive to learn more about the new places and people of the Italian wine scene. For this event, we will be showcasing wines from Central and Southern Italy, made from native grapes that are not yet well known here in the States. This will be a fun opportunity to learn from a man who truly loves what he does.

Wine Class Schedule
Find the summer class schedule on our website.

The whites were all pretty good, although I am not a white wine drinker. The basin Bourgogne blanc is a good value compared w/ the more expesive whites.

As for the reds, the 1998 Fougeray was really drinking well. A little brownish tint, but very smooth with still enough fruit (though none of the wines were decanted). The 2002 is bigger/more tannic with good structure and should taste better with some bottle age.

The Domaine De L'Arlot Nuits St Georges "Clos de Forets" was quite unique compared to the other reds. The nose was similar to the Pinots from Rosella's Vineyard and initial tasting was the same, i.e. very California/Santa Lucia Highlands fruit-forward style.

I went to the Sauzet/Fougeray tasting as I was unexpected in town.

I thought the Combettes was the pick of the Sauzets. It was reasonably close in quality to the Bienvenues and Batard at a much lower price....and it was a significent step up from the Champ Canet (certainly worth the extra $20 imo).

The Bourgogne Blanc was good....but I'd rather have an 04 Chablis premier cru (Drion for example) for a similar price range and have more character.

Both the Bienvenues and Batard were great. I enjoyed the Bienvenues slightly more but at such a young age (for these wines) it's hard to say one will be better than the other.

All of the Fougeray's were excellent. The 98 is ready to drink now and has a nice aged complexity...and how often can you buy that in a burgundy for only $50....and a Bonnes Mares to boot. The 2000 was excellent as well, more fruit than the 98 but less complexity. The 02 was the best of the three, but it need time and was more $$$, so I bought a couple of the 98's.

The Charlopin was very ripe and somewhat oaky. The distributor was there and said the oak will in integrate over the next year or two. If so it'll be tasty stuff but not very chambolle like. For $5 more you can get an 03 Michel Gros Chambolle (or A-F Gros if you can find it) that I think is much better (good acidity despite the vintage, tastes like a chambolle, and has good concentration).

I thought the 03 De L'Arlot was quite good...good balance, acidity and concentration. Not sure if it's worth $67 tho. Interestingly....recently had the 96 of this same wine with SFWine and Skwid that was excellent (it was the 96....right?).

Event: Wine Tasting with the Winemakers: Peter Bargetto from Soquel Vineyard and Fritz Maytag from York Creek Vineyards

Date: Friday, May 26
Time: 6-9 PM
Cost: $5 – refunded with bottle purchase

San Francisco’s only winery, York Creek is the dream of the infamous Stanford Graduate Fritz Maytag, the man who is widely regarded as the person who invented “micro brewing” when he rescued the then 101 year old Anchor Steam Brewing Company in 1965. His tiny winery is across the street from Anchor Steam. Don’t miss this special opportunity to meet Fritz and taste his very special wines!!!

Like the many-threaded Italian tapestry that covers the wall of Soquel new facility, the story of Soquel Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountain is made many colorful and varied strands... of family, history and winemaking. Twins Peter and Paul Bargetto, along with friend Jon Morgan, began the winery in 1987 after leaving the family winemaking business. Bargetto Winery, also in the Santa Cruz Mountains, was started in 1933 by Peter and Paul's grandfather John Bargetto and his brother, Philip.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to see 2 great winemakers!!!

Cheers,

Your Vino Locale Gang!

In case anyone cares, my impressions:

2002 Emilio's Terrace Reserve Napa Valley - smooth, but not much character. 88
2002 Salvestrin Napa Valley~93pts Wine Spec Hot, not well integrated, but good fruit. 88
2002 Jordan -- total bell pepper city, extremely thin. Yuck. 82.
2002 Keenan Napa~92pts Parker - One of the stars. Tasty, nice round fruit, good finish = 92+
2002 Larkmead - Vegetal. Lush mouth feel, but the asparagus is too strong. 86
2003 Montelena Napa Valley~90pts Parker -- Not sure if brett or something else is at work. Very weird. Not rated.
2003 Vine Cliff Oakville - Green in the mouth. not rated.
2003 Pine Ridge Oakville - Straightforward flavors of cherry. Not bad by any means, but not profound. 91
2003 Peter Franus Napa Valley - Pretty darn good! A tad on the thin & tannic side, but quite enjoyable. 91
2003 Stelzner Stag's Leap District. Very thin & tannic. 84
2003 Meyer Napa Valley -- Some green present, but the nose & mouthfeel are very good. 92.
2003 Hestan Napa Valley~93pts Parker - Yum! Extremely tannic, with heavy oak, but all the pieces in place. Yummie! 94+++
2004 Buehler Napa Valley - Awesome nose! Unfortunately, palate does not deliver on the promise. Great value. 90
2004 Justin Paso Robles-- Jalapeno in the nose, other vegetal characteristics on palate. 86
